2nd hand rollcages

Postby roytarolla » Sun Sep 20, 2009 8:55 pm

Hey I have picked up a previously MSNZ approved cage from another KE70, Just wondering if anyone knew of any issues with getting this welded into my KE70 rather than getting fresh steel bent up.

Will the old welds need to be redone or can they just be checked when the car goes for it MSNZ approval?

rear half of the cage is still intact but front hoops have been cut off at the main roll bar. Cage didn't cost me anything so if i cant use it its no big issue.

as long as you have the homologation number, a cage can be transferred to another bodyshell.
one would ask why it was removed from previous car though.

Ok, firstly, don't do anything!

Secondly, contact MSNZ and get (if you haven't) a copy of the cage papers. Get them to eyeball the papers, and see if there is anything obviously stopping you re-using that cage.

Often, old cages built however many years ago can't meet current regulations, which means that they can't be refitted without work.

Thirdly, ask MSNZ office who is the nearest Tech Officer, or Tech Advisor (Roll Protection) to you. Then have the bars physically inspected. They can then advise you if the cage can be refitted, and what you need to do.

So, some cages can be refitted, some can't.

Not always. If it's an old spec cage, it might be only so many metres of scrap steel. You can't refit a cage that doesn't meet the regs of today.

yes Leon is correct, before he was in the Tech Dept of MSNZ, there were many 'fishy' cages installed.

i only scrutineer what i see on the day, i don't do rollcage homologation inspection.
But suffice to say, there are plenty of cages that don't look anything like what in the logbook!!

Will defiantly be checking with MSNZ before I do anything but I thought I would pick you guys brains first.

I may have a problem, as I dont think I will be able to track down the papers as im not sure which car it came from.

Can you not just get the cage inspected once its in the car in the same way you get a new cage inspected ie sandblast the paint off so welds can be inspected.

looks like materials and current design all meet the schedule A requirements but I will be adding additional bars, not to happy about a single bar for side impact protection.

Cage was removed because the car it was in rusted out and the guy just wanted it gone.

as long as you have the homologation number, MSNZ will have a copy of the paperwork, and providing the cage hasn't been altered and is of correct spec, it 'should' be able to be transferred.
