Why have crap performance and fuel economy when all the EFI stuff is available and cheap? There aren't that many wires involved.

Cause some people are manly enough to have awesome induction noise

Nothing wrong with the induction noise of 4 open trumpets on a blacktop ;)

research

Postby Madaz » Tue Sep 29, 2009 1:17 pm

been doing some more research around the forum/interwebz and it seems that a few people using bigger power KP starlies use a hilux diff.

Anyone here done this? How difficult to do?

yup

Postby ezy10s » Tue Sep 29, 2009 2:05 pm

the housing and axles require shortennning and re studing to 4x114.3- the mounts from the kp diff need to be removed and grafted onto the hilux housing- Using the drum brakes form the hilux diff is ridiculous as they are almost the same size as the original kp wheels!- so a disc brake conversion ( which needs to include a handbrake system) has to be adapted to fit. Drive shaft yoke needs to be changed to suit the diff head flange.
If youre running a lowered kp you may also find the pumpkin of the diff head slams up intothe floor when you drop the clutch- prety easy fix with either a sledgehammer or you can cut and raise the floor an inch or so.

Generally if you arent able to do this yourself it can run you anywhere from $1000-$2000 bucks!
If i had a choice id pay the extra initial layout on an AE86 diff and have someone swap the mounts from kp to ae diffand find a set of wheels to ausit the slightly wider offset of the diff. LSD choice is much much better for a T series diff over a hilux G series(which arent much chop in std form).

^ what he said. Be carefull with hilux rear ends as its easy to fall into a trap and get the wrong series. ie if you get an E series 7.1" diff you'll never ever find an LSD. F series 7.5" is the one you want. But the LSD's are pretty basic.
Thats why I went for a mazda rx3 lsd and econovan housing. the econovan housing has one long and 1 short axle, so we shortened the side with the long axle, found another lshort axle and hey presto.... The advantage is if i blow an axle a standard econovan one from the short side will fit, without having to shorten the axle itself... if ya know what i mean...

or win lotto and go for ae86 stuff...

thanks man

i guess it would make so much more sense to use as much from the ae86 rear end as possible for "factory fitment", as a pose to a hybrid of different parts.

So if i can source diff, gearbox and driveshaft(to be shortened?) from an ae86 im pretty much there.

yea makes life a bit easier when u break something. depends what ur using the car for though, i have to consider ease of finding axles etc cos it happens in rallying. but for street you should have no trouble.

maybe go and see dean at www.palmside.co.nz. They often do toyota conversions, they should have access to something that might do the job. They're good blokes, dean runs a dx corolla with a bda escort motor  They build good t50 boxes too they did mine.

i got a very early narrow hilux diff in my starlet, its even shorter then my celica T series diff, so there are options out there that don't involve much more work then t series diff's

parm side guys are very on to it, they will know exactly what you need and do. have been very helpful in my past projects,

cool

Postby Madaz » Tue Sep 29, 2009 10:38 pm

thanks for that mate.

Well looks like i will definately go have a yarn to Dean next time i see him.

Although i am thinking.....im sort of thought this would cost me around 5k to do right. So pretty much times that by 1.5.

Its almost enough to buy a genuine ae86. I know the starlet will be what i made it yadda yadda but the 86 is probably one of the few cars actually appreciating value! lol
