BMW does not age as well as Aristo.
Coolant issues, interior falling apart, electrical problems, diff problems, brittle plastic bits in the engine bay, expensive parts list goes on for 5-10yo BMW. Aristo on other hand does not have these issues.

The 528 is the best overall (in my opinion) best weight balance and a compromise between handling and straight line power. Was definately one of the most sucessful cars that segment has ever seen..
it WILL cost more to run than an aristo/lexus gs300 - but it's an infinately better car. Unless you really love the aristo shape and you already have your heart set on it, I would at least take it for a long test drive over some more challenging roads to see if it's really what you want...

fair enough I suppose this being a toyota forum
all i'll say is - remember 99% of enjoyment from car ownership comes from driving it. not watching the l/100km figures or changing the oil filter.
take a few weekend test-drives down some back-country roads - even somewhere like Howick to Maraetai or Takanini-Clevedon run should make things pretty crystal clear.
I'll agree on one thing though - forget about Holdens!
