Hilux 3l Diesel Engine - Crack prone?

Postby no_8wire » Thu Nov 05, 2009 9:21 am

I know that the 2.4 TD (2L) engines in the hiluxs/surf are pretty bad for cracking heads etc, however what are the 2.8 TD (3L) like in this regard?

Looking at buying an old surf and trying to decide between one with a 3.5L V8 (4V) or a 2.8 TD (3L)...

So any horror stories on the 3L since its in the same family of motors as the horrible gutless 2L?

the 3L is much much better
can still crack the head if the coolant system not looked after

4v is an interesting one....

yeah you dont hear much of the 4v... I cant seem to find any output figures for it though, but expect it to be pretty gutless since it is such an old model of motor..i.e 1973 carby...

Other than making sure the coolent system is ok and not leeting it overheat though, the 3l is a strong motor?

yeh mate they are a hearty motor if they are looked after. their main problem is they suffer from lack of maintenance. the cooling systems corode/block up and cause them to over heat and crack heads. the majority of the time its from sitting under the seat of a van were there is limited air flow. they have a bad rep for blowing up, but the blame should be placed on the owners.

the 3L + Turbo combinations go extremely well. iv been involved in a couple of builds and they go really well, just gotta dyno them and pump them up with fuel to go with the boost and have a good clean radiator with fresh antifreeze.

So did they not come factory with a turbo? Or was the reference to dyno and fueling only if you are increasing the boost?
