Yeah VVT pulley. To test, disconnect the oil solenoid plug, apply 12V to the solenoid, the revs drop and the noise will stop.

Round thing in the middle of the pic is the solenoid, apply 12V to that.

no aftermarket option, last time i checked it was $400 from toyota, try the toyspeed sponsor if he can get a better price,

make sure its this this that is causing you problems, ive had a noisy vvt cam for ages but its not causing any faulty running,

When I first got my FXGT, it sounded like a diesel, so I had the dealer replace it with a lower-km one. Didn't make the noise go away completely, but quietened it right down.. maybe try get hold of a lower-km one, when I priced up a couple, they were $60ish for a second-hand one from a wrecker, or just over $1000 new.. but I'm sure you'd get a mean deal from the parts man on here! :)

it wont matter if its low k's or not, when they go is when they feel like it, not how long its been driving for, i had buy two wheels before i found a good one and even then its a little noisy, so i just live with it,

i should really take one apart to see what goes wrong with them, maybe there is a worn out somethingorrather that could be fixed, looks like i have some thing to do in the weekend now,

My solution was to get blacktop cams+pulleys. I noticed that blacktops don't have this problem as bad.

black tops still fail
the pulleys can stick in one position which will affect the performance

Looks like it might be the spring losing tension perhaps, or as Revhead said, maybe sticking.

I have heard of people dropping them off at a reconditioners and leaving them in their acid bath for a week and it seemed to sort the problem out.
