hose clamps vs t bolt clamps i/c piping

Postby deaf_rattle » Sun Dec 06, 2009 12:15 pm

Been hearing conflicting information regarding what to use to clamp the silicon joiners on the i/c piping

What does the TS populace have to suggest?

cheers

IMO if there is a bead around the end of your IC pipes, hose clips will be fine.
But T-Clamps look flash as. WAY expensive though.
I think there was already a thread for this....

I have used t-bolt clamps on my intercooler pipes mainly because hose clamps tend to allow the rubber to extrude through the slots of the hose clamp which bite and cut into the hose, you can get them with out the slots which are better. T-bolt clamps tend to be a lot winder than hose clamps aswell.

Hose clamps without the slots, groves instead.

I've had a couple of the factor hoses split becauase of the hose clamps, only when you tighten them too much

Yep hose clamps work fine if used right, do not over tighten
And feedback from the techs at work are the ones with the holes are better than the grooved ones, do not slip as much, can be re-used easier and do not jam up with dirt etc as easy.

dont use T bolt clamps on that piping, it is thin wall alloy. t bolt clamps are far to easy to overtighten and crush the pipe

The best way is to have tabs on the pipe and also on whatever you're hooking it up to. Then you can wire them together or use a bolt or other means. That way the hose clamp is only sealing the pipe rather than holding them together.

Alert Motorsport sell the hose clamps with a protector sleeve that follows the worm drive so it doesnt touch the silicone.

I got a set of T bolt ones from work for my SW, only because I could get them super cheap. But I ended up swapping most of them back to normal ones because in most cases there wasnt enough room for them.

T bolt's are a better clamp if used properly, even on sof ali pipe etc. If you crank it up just as tight as a normal clamp, you have the same force applied to the pipe but over a much larger surface area.

I use t-clamps and I've beaded the ends of the piping because I wanted to be sure that the piping stays where it belongs.

Nothing is worse than loosing a race or getting stuck in a AFM car because a pipe has come off!

I'd say anything upto about 20-25psi normal clamps are fine - anything over t-clamp!
