kill switch

Postby deaf_rattle » Tue Dec 08, 2009 9:27 pm

Looking at running a kill switch in the supra
was thinking of putting it inline with the 12v positive from boot to starter.

Is this the best place to run it? or better to do it inline with fuel pump or alternator line?

cheers

Kill switch as in "I'm leaving my car for 10 mins, I'll flick the switch" or as in "I'm leaving my car in the garage for a month, I'll flick the switch" ? If its the first one then don't both doing the starter or any high current stuff as its not worth it. And the alternator line? Thats just going to mean it drives until the battery runs out of go.

Tidiest way is to use a relay to cut ignition and/or fuel pump power. ECU power, starter solenoid etc

iirc All that I or my mates have had, ground(?) the coil, so no ignition.

But these have been (all but one) carb'd cars so no use (I think anyway) putting it on the fuel pump (I presume cos the float would still have some fuel in it) - not applicable to you as you have efi though.

Grounding the coil -ve is a good way to kill a car,

and to kill the coil.

Most electronic ignition coils will be stuffed if you leave the ign one for a while with the coil -ve grounded.

interupt Ign to the ECU,
Kill a dist signal wire
cut the ECU to Igniter signal,
etc etc

lots of better ways to do it.

I understand your point, but its the how, not the where switch is...

Matt, these were all pretty old cars so perhaps no other option? Definately no ECU anyway.

Anything with points and a mechanical fuel pump is almost impossible to immobilise electrically anyway, but yeah.

the car is alarmed, with dual immobiliser.
The kill switch is more for if something goes wrong i can pull the plug.

get a main battery type switch with the red key and put it on the main battery cable inline the only thing u have to do is run a new alternator supply from the battery side of the switch to the alternator supply if u dont do this the car will still run when the switch is turned off.

I'm guessing...
- your desire for a kill switch is not related to car security
- if you have a problem while driving you will turn the ignition key off
- you would like a kill switch somewhere in your car

Kill switch between battery and earth will make it safer easier to work on your car...
No big sparks when you accidently touch spanner to earth when undoing the positive battery connection first
No big sparks when you accidently touch spanner to block when undoing starter motor wiring

Note - a kill switch in your battery wiring won't stop the engine if it is running!
The alternator will still provide power to run computer and fuel pump!
Many a race car has failed scrutineering due to this! It has to interrupt power to the computer/pump

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Carry on then  Could just copy a race car design they use with those big red keys you can remove? Not necessarily using the key switch, but cut power to the same parts etc.

You want something like this Image

It removes connection for ignition, fuel pump, and positive feed from battery. This will stop the engine, stop fuel from being pumped, and remove risk of electrical fire in engine bay when crashed. also the added bonus of being convenient to turn off when working on electrical stuff :D

Any race place should sell something to do the job.
