4AGE Clutches/flywheels

Postby AE86less » Fri Dec 11, 2009 10:54 am

I've pulled the clutch apart on my 85 (smallport and K50 gbox) because I was able to push the clutch fork in with one finger and have run into a few problems.

First, I bought the car with engine and box assembled so I don't know whats in there.

The Clutch plate that came with the car has a spline that is far too big for the input shaft on the box but the pressure plate does bolt to the flywheel just fine.

The clutch kit I bought has a different thrust bearing despite it being claimed that it was for a K50. The clutch plate fits on the spline perfectly. The pressure plate is a much smaller diameter than the flywheel and doesn't fit. The new clutch plate is too small for the old pressure plate.

I don't know a huge amount about clutches and this is the first time I've done one. What do I need in order to make this work?

You'll need a 4AGE pressure plate/release bearing and a 19 spline clutch plate, you'll have to do a bit of digging to see what will suit. IF you're in no hurry I can have a look over the weekend

1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

so your running a
4age flywheel,
4age pressure plate
and k50 clutch disc
in a k50
well that's what im running and the most likely combo to use in this 4ag/k50 setup.

if you need a clutch plate, i have a uprated exidy k50 plate here for little moneys,

sounds like the original clutch kit was all 4age stuff.. hence the plate had a bigger spline to suit a t50 input shaft.
your new clutch is to suit k50 so the spline is now the right size, but the plate maybe smaller than your 4age flywheel and pressure plate.
so what size 4age clutch surface do you have?
there's a few different sizes. the non supercharged are either 200mm or 215mm outside diameter. 200mm being the bluetop.
you'll need to buy a clutch plate that has the k50 spline and the same size clutch surface as the 4age flywheel. if you have the 215mm flywheel/pressure plate you could possibly swap it for the bluetop ones.

release bearing not fitting... do you know that when you buy the bearing it needs to be 'fitted' to the bearing carrier. you don't usually get the carrier when buy a bearing. this is the part that slides on the tube surrounding the input shaft of gearbox. so the old one needs to have the bearing pulled off and the new one pressed back on.
