4age smallport help?

Postby doin donuts » Tue Dec 15, 2009 11:01 pm

hey all, i have an ae85 levin, done a 4age smallport conversion. been along time in the build but finally road going. as of late it has a high pitch squeel when idling and driving in low revs, and seems to be clutch related ie when i use the clutch to get into gear. when i turn the car off and the engine has stopped for 1 or 2 after it does a higher pitched squeel. its not everytime i drive but when it does do it seems to be when been driving for 10+ minutes

now i know what most will say, check the belts but they have been checked and had 2 different mates that are damn good with cars and engines stand there and scratch their heads.

just wondering if anyone has had similar problems? any help will be greatly appreciated, i will try and video the sound so all can hear if it will help?

might be clutch release bearing screaming from no grease when it heats up after 10minutes driving, this is last case scenario :)
they usually feel crunchy when spun buy hand when stuffed,

video wont help with E-nostic
best to try to isolate where the noise is coming from, long screw driver to ear and parts of engine/gearbox should help find something, (handle ends goes to ear :P )

Release bearing would have been my first thought too except, release bearing wouldn't freewheel or have pressure on it after engine has stopped (with clutch disengaged)

Could also be a vacuum or exhaust leak somewhere that only shows up when things have warmed up a bit. Use a piece of garden hose to get a more localised idea of where it's coming from.

You don't know what moves when using the clutch. Things might just move enough to cause a leak. The hose will help you isolate where the nosise is coming from anyway.

Other then a fan clutch, there isn't much that will continue to move & possibly make a noise after the engine has stopped. Does it have a turbo?
A really loose, well broken in release/throwout bearing would have enough inertia to still spin a bit when the engine has stopped if it doesn't contact the clutch.

It could still be a vacuum leak, the way the noise drops off. Bit like squeezing the end of a ballon that you've blown up. Use the hose to isolate the area......

heya rollaholic, about a month or so after had it running it started, yeah will look at hoses mate, has all new aftermarket hoses so might be something like that, but weird how it makes that last high pitch squeel only when in gear

When in gear there is less drag as the gearbox isn't turning as well so the engine will spin that little bit longer when you turn it off. You might find it does the same with only the clutch in and not in gear.

I think that maybe the pulsing in the noise is the increase in vacuum as the valves open in the area/runner that is leaking. It keeps going after switching off for a moment until there isn't any vacuum left.

And be careful with the hose in your ear - if you find the exact spot it'll just about deafen you!! If your mates thought it was the something to do with the clutch, start near the back of the intake.
