c series gearbox lsd interchangeability

Postby AE25 » Sat Dec 19, 2009 10:12 am

yes ive searched

the background: ok so i've got one of those weak c160's to replace an ae101 c52 box that has bung 3rd and 4th gear synchro/hub behind a S/T 20v ae82. the c160 is non lsd and price was right. using std ae101 20v clutch to drive it.
im a bit hesitant to even look into fitting lsd as i do like to give it stick.. floor it and take off hard etc.. and have never broken a diff or gearbox ever *yet* in any of my cars. i don't clutch dump. using lsd will put more load on the drivegear etc. as im probably going to pull box apart to check hubs and synchro condition before install .. would be good opportunity to fit lsd. if i come across an lsd cheap enough that will be deciding factor (pickapart whore here).
decisions. decisions.

the questions- lsd interchangeability
1: will an lsd from a 5speed non 4a C series box fit c160? like a gt starlet lsd.
2: from what i have read, yes a c5# lsd fit c160. so would i be correct to assume there is no issue swapping the thinner c160 crown wheel over to a C5# lsd carrier?
3: has anyone ever investigated whether a c56 drive gear/shaft is at all swappable into c160? i would think it not possible or toyota would've fitted the wider c5# crownwheel to start with.

It's been a while.... But iirc the crown wheel is thinner to make room for the 6th gear so the 5spd one won;t go in because the extra gear is in the way.

Sergei rebuilt his so I am sure he will have looked into that...

The AE101/C52 drive shafts fit C160 LSD box no problems.
I never got to measure the height of open diff off C52 to height of LSD from C160. You might be able to fit C160LSD into C52 box (might need shims/spacers), and should be able to fit C160 LSD into C160 non-lsd box.

You don't need to launch or do burnouts to break C160, all I did is drive enthusiastically around the corners and my crown and pinion was in same shape as mouth of 70yo Thailand whore.
