That's sound advice.

Two separate incidents changed my views on filters.

About 18 years ago we put an aftermarket filter on my 2E rally engine following a very expensive rebuild. The thing seized in the middle of it's 2nd competitive stage.
Thinking I must have done something wrong I took the car complete to a renowned expert in these engines for him to dismantle. He couldn't find a thing wrong other than the aftermarket filter.
He recalled that AVIS rental cars had experienced a string of engine failures with 2E powered Corollas & Starlets when they installed cheap non OE filters.
He rebuilt the engine exactly as it was and installed a factory filter and that car went on to complete two full seasons of rallying including two 4 day Rally NZ's.

About the same time I had bought my wife a late model low mileage Mazda V6. Before she went away on a long trip I changed the oil & filter and almost immediately we noticed the top end getting noisy.
On calling my friendly Mazda service manager, before I even had a chance to tell him what I'd done, he said "you've changed the oil haven't you, and you didn't use a genuine filter?" He was right and after changing back the problem all but went away.

So in my view, at $40, a genuine filter might seem expensive in comparison to cheaper aftermarket items but in reality they're good insurance.

Being the ex-TRD man and all how good are there filters I no they cost alot but they must be quite good I'm thinking I only use these for my Supra though I am biased as I have so much TRD product on my car as I think its all damn good regardless of what it is.

I can tell you from personal experience that the TRD filters filter better than stock genuine. I used them for a while on my 101 when they were really cheap and they'd keep the oil a lot cleaner for longer on that dirty bitch.

That will be purely price driven, not quality.

The new repco filters are basically ryco filters, but not sourced through ryco. :?

And knowing the owner of that place he wouldnt care about the quality of the filters.

Since about early this year? Ryco decided to get their filters made overseas, so Repco decided they could do the same. Probably still made in the same factory though

Or ask the place you buy it from what the warranty is. Ryco will replace a motor that has been damaged due to one of their filters failing, have seen this firsthand. (Only catastrophic failure in 5 years selling them btw)

I have only had 5 filters fail - all have been ryco/repco (12 year period)

The first one we got nothing, not even a replacement filter from our suplier.

The next 3 we got paid for the filters and a small amount of labour -although it took 5 months to get paid along with a lot of phone calls!

The last one failed this week and we don't expect to get $&#$% all and if we do it will take a long time!

Interesting, in the one failure we had, GUD sent out a rep to inspect the filter and the vehicle, then sent out a cheque for a replacement motor and labour. Maybe you need to lean on your supplier a bit harder?

Ive been using Ryco filters in the MR2 for 8 +years and over 100,000 kms of driving, never an issue.

$$ spent on fancy filters are wasted dollars, spend it elsewhere.

Its amazing the amount of people that are so pedantic over which wanky oil is the best and which fancy filter works better yet neglect other ciritical fluids in the cars system like Transmission, Brake, Power Steering and Coolant.

Same goes for genuine parts, just because its got Toyota on it and cost twice as much doesnt mean its better. Some parts you go genuine and other you go branded and others dare I say cheap eBay chinese made stuff is fine.

eg for my car

- SARD Fuel Pump - Cheaper than Toyota but higher rated
- ebay XS Power 100mm IC, 36 degrees C at 18 ambient at 19 pounds of boost, no fans on dyno either
- Previously run $99 German brand of HT leads, lasted for 100,000 kms
- Cap n Rotor (Genuine Toyota only dont skimp here)
