3SGTE issues

Postby iOnic » Thu Dec 24, 2009 6:25 pm

Well I went to start the new engine today and the spark plug leads (especially #1) keep popping out of the rocker cover. Almost seems like the plugs aren't tight and the piston is pressurizing the cavity? Trouble is all the plugs were torqued in there properly.

The engine also isn't turning over particularly fast......it's really lazy. Has a brand new 600cca battery and I've triple checked every earth in the engine bay.

Any ideas? I'll be checking for fault codes in the morning and pulling all the plugs out to see what they look like etc. Any suggestions would be great.

EDIT: Car is a 90 SW20 GT-S and the engine is mildly modded with baffled sump, t88-34d turbo, headwork, cams, OS valves etc

well.......... not that I can be much help of what you can do already

But I'd first check the plug physically see if it's broken
and then I'll check if the rubber gasket is still good around #1, maybe getting pressure from crankcase.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Hopefully there'll be a pic and vid of start up tomorrow :) The turbo is meant for my 5S but its on the 3S for now I guess. Coupla pics on my facebook :P

I'll put your suggestion on the list of things to check in the morning. Is there a lower seal/gasket in the spark plug hole or is it just the one on the rocker cover? A non working crankcase ventilation system could explain the sluggish turning over as well....hmm.

Check that the PCV valve is working, sounds like you're getting a pressurised crankcase.

Anything I should look for when checking it? Also do I need to have the small PCV hose from the cam cover to the intake manifold connected?

Agree :? T88 even for a 2.2l is massive...

Are the ends of your leads alright? Might not be holding onto the spark plug properly.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

It's big but hardly out of this world

Even if the leads weren't holding onto the spark plug securely there shouldn't be enough pressure build up in there to blow the dust caps right off the cam cover - they sit in there pretty well...so something's definitely wrong somewhere. I'm taking it all apart tomorrow and checking everything over again - *joy*

T-78 is almost too big for a 3S-GTE, T-88 is just ridiculous 8O

Sell it and get something that will work with the motor or it'll just be a dog

T-78 would only be good if kept up in the revs. Daily driving? Nooo wayyyyy

The car is being built for the dragstrip duties and Superlap type events. It is in no way, shape or form a daily driver. If the turbo proves too peaky in it's power delivery I do have other options :)

Should be sweet for drags, as long as you keep the revs up. In that video the chap was revving psat 8 by the looks

If the needle has any relation to stock revs, then it was hitting just over 9....

should be tiny pin hole vents in the lead boots, if these r blocked air expands in the wells and they pop off, grab a needle.

Well.... I'd say the T88 is more suited for wangan style 300kph+ runs, it's just... too big, too laggy.

But I think the Garage Fukui (Phoenix Powers) MR2 is running T88, also top secret's golden supra with 3S-GTE is running T88.

Maybe if things don't work out, you can change the exhaust housing and get some spool back :)

Any news on the spark plugs?

thats all it can be imo, youre not using the wrong plugs as in taper seal type plug vs washer seal?.

Ive never come across that ever.

Nah haven't been near the car yet. I was only gathering suggestions yesterday so I had a plan of attack for today.

Adamal wrote:If the needle has any relation to stock revs, then it was hitting just over 9....

The headwork was performed with the intention of reaching around the 9000rpm mark but the bottom end on the 3S isn't up to the task of such revs. Once the other engine is built I think the T88 will be plenty usable for it's intended purpose. Current rev limit is 8500rpm.

Spark plugs were all loose :? Anyway sorted that and put it all together and it's not blowing the leads off now. Seems to be turning over a bit better now as well but still a bit slow (180ish cranking rpm). Went to start it but it's getting no spark (it backfired yesterday so it had spark....) I've noticed there are cut wires at the ECU as well so it looks like the "mechanic" that I entrusted the car with has done something dodgy there :(

Aah well I'm off to the beachr. Maybe I'll grab a wiring diagram and go through each pin on the ECU this weekend sometime but I doubt it as it's holiday season and I'm lazy.

Cheers for the help and merry xmas to everyone :)
