crank button

Postby deaf_rattle » Thu Dec 24, 2009 2:09 pm

Is it possible to have a crank button with a stock ecu set up?
basically, it would be nice to have a crank only button to make sure i have oil pressure before engine start up.

Or is this too difficult?

cheers

Very easy, just don't one the wires in the ignition switch (will have to find it experimentally), like a "ignition override" push button.

Just wire a wire to the starter... easy

But why?

If you're worried about oil pressure for the first time starting, see if you can borrow a pressure primer from an engine reconditioners. Just hook it up to a little compressor, and wind about 30psi into it

Just unplug coils, take plugs out and wind it over on the key if its just initial start up. If you want it for every other time you start the car then there are other issues I think need addressed

it's not a bad idea if your oil system has long lines running to say a remote filter and oil cooler to crank the engine slowly to get oil pressure before it starts up.

A bit of piece of mind and very easy to do, all you need to do is wire a momentary switch in parallel with the ignition switch (just the part that triggers the starter). Then you just press the button before you turn the key on, although you wont get the oil pressure light on the dash, so a better option might be to have a switch to kill power to the ECU so you can crank normally but it wont inject or fire.

On the ignition loom splice the constant 12v wire and splice the starter motor wire, buy a button or switch, which ever you prefer from say dick smiths. wire it in, easy as pie, plus have a fiddle round. learn how to hotwire a car :D

(not necessarily directed at TC as im sure most people on here know what im talking about..)

Unplug fuel pump relay (if its easily accessible), unplug ignitor.
This way you dont need to loosen off the spark plugs. But you dont want to be cranking for over like 30s as prob not too good for the battery etc.

But if your priming the enigne for its first time then I suggest taking out the spark plugs.

how about you get an oil pressure switch (one that lights up the 'your screwed' oil pressure light on the dash) and run that off a relay so your ecu doesnt get power until you've built up that pressure

Get a Stinger ECU!

Put foot on gas above 90% to disable fuel and IG circuits.

Crank engine for however long you require

Release throttle

Engine starts

Done!

Actually on a second note

I get very little oil pressure while cranking

Not enough to make much of a difference at least.

Maybe the 7M's different?

Actually - IIRC the 7M is a low pressure, high volume oil system?

almost all aftermarket ECUs do that
