aftermarket piggyback safc vs f con

Postby jakesae101 » Sun Dec 27, 2009 1:46 pm

was looking at this for my 4agze

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=259713900

but was wondering would it be compatible with my bigport 4agze ( the afm version) next year i have a few plans for it want to up the boost with the sc to 1 bar maybe a bit over as i have a custom pulley and i dont know how much boost i shall get in the end looking at running some new cams 264? the stock ecu can handle them so im told and goto a fmic and some bigger injectors also like some 410cc evo ones i know the safc can do the injectors ect but what is better for tuning as i dont want to go down the full aftermarket ecu track yet

with cams & big injectors etc,, would be far easyer to setup and better results with aftermarket ecu. even an old v5 link or something will be alot better than anything piggyback

Thats a piggy back computer for the AE86 ECU, not for a 4AGZE. For what your wanting to do I would save for a aftermarket computer.

thaught they could possibly be interchangeable i cant really justify spending the money on a link at this point in time and id have to change the ignition system around as it wont work with the 4agze wasted spark setup

Will cost you less to buy a Link (even a cheap old one) now than to buy a 2nd hand fcon/safc and realise they're actually pretty shit and you need a Link to do it properly anyway

That's because Links are better than SAFC's....

Can you even control big injectors and cams with just S-AFC?
I mean, S-AFC is great for just trimming a bit of fuel here and there if you have intake and exhaust and just wanna pick up another 10hp, but for controlling bigger injectors and cams.... :/ shrug.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

There's a limit to how much fuel you can trim/add with an SAFC. It's something like +/-50% from memory. Which is fine as long as your injectors aren't much bigger than stock. It becomes a problem if the injectors you have are over 50% larger than stock  With bigger cams (which the SAFC has no control over) and bigger injectors it's quite hard to get a consistent idle (or get an idle at all) on the SAFC's. It also has no control over the ignition system as it's a fuel only controller.

They *DO* work in lightly modified situations but for what you want to do, I wouldn't even go near an SAFC. Mapecu's are good and that's the only piggyback I'd consider but even they have their limitations.

That statement alone should tell you everything you need to know. There's a reason why a 2nd hand link is more expensive than a new piggyback ;)

SAFC I tried to use this with my set-up I have in my car it did'nt work very well at all the reason I went down this track because of the cost factors involved. So I went for plan B the F-Con.

Negatives of doing this is the high cost and thats it.

Positives were it transformed my cars performance it will give you increased fuel economy more performance it just feels like the car is doing and making the power alot easier and the power and torque delivery is seamless it does it a whole lot easier.

STM tuned my car and it fires from cold everytime and as above the fuel economy is a real bonus.Best fuel mileage before hand on a full tank was 430 and 450 at a stretch now I routinely do 500 KM on a full tank running 1.3 bar, that is Basin Reserve WGTN to the top of the Wharerata's just outta of Gisborne.

So in closing it is'nt a contest spend the money and get the HKS F-Con V-Pro I highly recommend this product.

Yep but in my case I went down both tracks so I payed twice though one is a hell of alot more expensive than the other the F-Con is for sure the better option for all round performance and if you can take the hit I'm 100% sold on this as being the better option.

Thing is with the safc is its really only good for making minor adjustments.. You cant tweak the timing with it, and the majority of the power is in the timing. They are good units when used for small adjustments. Anything more than small adjustments it indirectly fuks with timing as its effectively moves cells in the ecu's program e.g. add 30% larger injectors, reduce fuel in the safc to get a/f's within limits, but in doing so you may be adding another 5degrees timing advance as your going to a lower fuel/timing cell in the ecu and can easily get into detonation problems. Can always retard base timing but itll still never be as efficient as a full timing/fuel tune. (higher the boost, lower the timing)If you know what your doing they can be used effectively with other mods too.

AFCs work really well when used in conjunction with an ITC. If you put enough thought into anything you can get good results. The AFM doesn't need to meter all the air, some of the air can be bypassed to use bigger injectors. Same for all piggybacks.

I would be really careful saying the SAFC is only for light modifications.

A friend of mine used to run one on his MKIV Supra with 850cc injectors, a Greddy T78 and HKS cams running about 25psi. Best fuel curve I have ever seen to this day and very good power at 400wkw!

im still on the wall with piggybacks, they have there place i think,
im really liking my greddy ultimate, the massive amounts of adjustments for $600, the list of features is huge. + its self adjusting injector sizing makes changing to bigger ones easy, and its only getting better with free updates,
i think its a great piggyback,

i dont think i will ever buy a link, microtech, wolf, stinger bla bla bla,
next step will be going straight into a motec,

Motec is nice but 50% of the features are never needed. My EMS 6860 (big brother to the stinger) is only using about 60% of what it can do.

What the hell?? He must be a very very lucky man - or there is far more to the story than is mentioned in this post!

All the S-AFC does is tricks the ECU into thinking its under less or more load than it really is under - the fuel and ignition curves used are still as programmed into the stock ECU. If you use an S-AFC to "lean out" a mixture, it will also add timing.... not really the thing you want when a lot of our imported "JDM" cars run more fuel and more timing than is suited to our weasel piss fuel.
