Thread damage

Postby thornz » Thu Dec 31, 2009 4:07 pm

In the past few days we have been replacing the hose from hell on my mr2. Have finally got the hoses replaced, so thought we were on the way to an early victory. Now, when reassembling the oil cooler and relief valve, it appears we have cross threaded it, only the at the very start, the first ring pretty much. So now we cant screw it back in.

What do we do to fix this? Can we push through it should sort itself out being that its only the first thread or so? Or will it need re tapping?

if its the male section you've damaged you can try what jake has suggested, though it depends on how bad it is. i've had limited success with thread files myself, die is much better.

for what its worth i always try and get those unions started by hand first, at least a couple of turns so you can be sure its not cross threaded.

if its the female section you definitely want to tap it before trying to put it on again.

It looks like only the female end is damaged, the male end looks fine.

as said if its an internal thread run an intermediate tap down it,

being on the oil side of things you would want to isolate the part as much as possible and then flush / clean it throughly once you have cleaned the thread up
