TE71 to ae86 diff

Postby groupagt4 » Sun Jan 03, 2010 1:40 am

I have had diff problems for a while now and need a fix.
Someone told me that the diff head from a te71 swaps straight into a ae86 diff.

Is this correct?
Does it have a lsd, if not can i swap the one from mine over.
if it does not fit directly what mods are needed to make it fit
also heard this te71 is 4.1 ratio, is this right.

Most likely, yes. If its a T-series diff(I think it is). Count and measure the distance across the bolt holes, it should be the same. Unless its the LATE model AE86 T-Series diff with the bigger splines.

Unlikely

Yes, but have you ever rebuilt a diff head? You will need a dial gauge, to set the backlash, and a good torque wrench. You cannot just whip it out and swap them. It has to be done correctly or it will be noisy and destroy its self quickly. Or you can pay a gearbox guy at least $300++++ to swap the lsd unit

The ratio is stamped on the side of the crown/ring gear. Or it should take 4.1 turns of the pinion to rotate the ring gear once....

Yep as Adoom says, it'll swap right over unless its a facelift AE86, and provided its not a NZ new TE71 with the carby 2T-B. TE71 diffs are usually 4.1 non LSD, factory ones are quite rare.
Count the teeth on the ring gear and divide it by the number of teeth on the pinion gear and you'll get your ratio.

sweet thanks for the help guys. I will get my mates uncle to rebiuld it, hes a whizz with shit like this. also how do i know if mine as a face lift diff, do you have to take the sideshafts out and measure them. the car is a 83 which i think is pre face lift but i doubt its got the original diff in there.
Is the te71 diff a s series?

Yeah facelift diffs have thicker axles, forget the measurement off hand. NZ new TE71 diffs are S code, Jap models are T
