More 4WS questions

Postby celica_xr9145 » Wed Jan 06, 2010 4:51 pm

Have been taking apart my Celica today and have managed to get to the 4WS ECU's.

According to Toyodiy, one is the 'Steering Control Computer' and the other is 'Steering Control Motor Driver' so i assume its the first one i want.

First thing i want to try is to reset the 4WS ECU. How is this done? I've tried disconnecting the battery, i've removed the fuse but still no good.

If this doesn't work, apparently the rear steering rack needs recentering. Anybody know how this is done?

I can't take it to the mechanic because i have no money as usual plus if this keeps going wrong, it will be handy to know how to fix it myself 8)

I'm sure there are a few mechanics on here that have fixed this before :?

Thanks

I've also jest removed the Steering control computer from the car and made sure the connectors were clean, etc but still no good.

After doing this, when doing the fault codes, the 4WS light doesn't stop flashing, what does this mean?

When checking engine codes a steady flash when diagnostic terminals means all is good, no fault stored.
To "reset" an ecu you disconnect the power to it. there is no other way or more to it.

What is the fault you are trying to fix?
Do you have a copy of the repair manual for the car?

It had 4WS fault code 11-ECU. I do have the haynes repair manual for it but is pretty much useless as it doesn't cover 4WS, TEMS and only a little bit for the 3SGE. Pretty much only for the US Celicas.

If it helps, i have a 4WS online manual with diagrams but its written in japanese.

This isn't the first time it has happened, last time i took it to the mechanic and it was fixed. I shall have to dig up the reciept, gives a basic description on what was done. As far as i know, there were no parts used and the rear steering rack was recentred.

This might help aswell

Shows you in the manual you posted how to center the rack.

Didn't know Toyota did a manual, do you know if it covers 4WS, etc?

I would have thought the info you have is from the toyota book, hence mention of using SST's rather than what looks to be a bolt with no thred on the end to center the rack.

Right, have the rear rack compenents in sight, have been playing around with it but can't seem to locate to part with the 3 terminals.

And the bolt shown in the diagram is an ordinary allen key bolt. Once removed a few drops of fluid came out. :?

Good new and bad news.

Good news is that code 11 has been sorted.

Bad news, thanks to my 'helpful' neighbour, now have codes

22- main motor open
23- main motor seized
32- back up motor

he said there is a possibility that i might need a new back up motor as he snapped 2 of the heads of the bolts and broke one of the black things coming of the back up motor

I think its safe too say you'll see the car on trade me very soon :(

Have read his project thread, would be easier and cheaper to get it fixed every few months but have thought about it :?

Would be great if i can keep it locked in 'Revs 2WS' mode which makes the car 2WS when reversing but as soon as you put it in 1st, goes back to 4WS :?

Going to ask around for a new steering rack and get it reconditioned with new brushes before i put it on trade me.
