Brake pad suggestions, ae101

Postby kopfschuss » Wed Jan 06, 2010 8:55 pm

So, with doing a few trackdays and things in my trueno (92 ae101 non SS) and my pads running low I was looking at what brake pad options are available. I currently have some TRW (GDB232 part no) pads which were good, but then I dont really know any better. I looked to get some bendix ultimates, but it seems they dont make them for this car. What other options should I be looking at? for occasional trackdays/spirited driving etc.

Also whats a good fluid to use with them?

so just stick with the 1144 then and not the 1166? Ive generally been doing about 6 or 7 stints of 5 laps (+ warmup/down) during the trackdays, and maybe attend 2 or 3 a year?

What fluid do you recommend then?

Edit: this has been taupo track 1/4 so far.

If your not losing your brakes as in they're not getting to hot and pedal sinking etc stick with them. No point spending more for a pad if you dont need to

Dot 4 brake fluid is fine

I ran out of brakes last time. Foot to the floor, no brakes at all till they lock up. Im not 100% sure if it was air or fluid boiling, but my pads need replacing soon anyway so might as well replace them with something decent. The TRW's I found good, was just seeing what other alternatives there are?

Actually both times ive had spongey brake problems by the end of the day, the first time though might have just been because the fluid was x amount of years old, I hadnt changed it since buying the car.

All depends on how much you want to spend,
I got top of the line mintex ones which retail at $320ish for fronts alone (twin pot evo brakes)
they should be more than enough for what you need. Maybe find the next ones down?

If your fluid is old then make sure you get fresh stuff

I gave it new silverline 5.1 fluid last time but still managed to have no brake pedal by the end of the day. Can anyone else comment on the m1144 pad? by the looks of it the 66 is a bit extreme for my use, they seem to kill discss for road cars.

1144's would probably be the best bet, they're more of a competition pad than the TRW pads are. Have heard of people nuking them still! Perhaps look at TRD?

Hmm, ill see what price the 1144's come to then. If they are a definite improvement on the trw and a decent price ill go for them. I hate ot think what TRD pads would cost :/ .

Surprised no-one suggested carbotechs or endless as an option?

Also I rate motul RBF600 fluid as being up to the task..

Love my mintex 1166, I'm running AE101 brakes in my starlet, $250/pair from racebrakes. Running high temp fluid is very important! Pads can be as good as you like, if your fluid is boiling you're going to have a hard time. I was using penrite sin, great stuff if a bit pricey.

They will do just as many K's as a set of road pads doing a few track days a year, pretty excellent longevity. One significant disadvantage is how dusty they are, if you don't mind cleaning your wheels all the time then go for it!

I've run many brake fluids, all around the same temperature range, and all cheap. I have never had a fluid boiling problem. Changing fluid regularly is a good idea though.
If anything I would recommend a full race pad for better braking at the track, it has made the most difference in my car.

Although i've never used mintex 1166, i've seen them removed from other cars and they don't seem to wear well (crumbling), and they create hot spots.
