Has anyone on here ran an external igniter on their dizzy's

Postby crispy'86 » Fri Jan 08, 2010 8:55 am

Hey all, i'm running twin sidies on my 4age motor and have changed to an electronic distributor out of a 3a, it looks like these use the external igniter on coil setup . My question is has anyone done this arrangement as opposed to the internal igniter setup on theirs, and with powering up the distributor it has 2 wires 1 pink, 1 red, same with the igniter. So where do the wires connect on both the distributor and the igniter, does the dizzy use a wire off the negative to one wire but if so where does the other one go?

I haven't been able to find a 3au specific wiring diagram, just 4a corolla one which doesn't help me much due to 4a electronic setups all being internal igniter/coil

all the 3A ones I have seen are all internal.

post up some pictures of the dist internals
and of the igniter,
and i'll be able to tell you how to wire it.

Image Those 2 igniters are of the suspected ecu trigered igniter

Image These are of the module i think is the 3au module for the distributor, looks like maybe the white wire is the trigger wire

Hard to tell from those pics, but I have my suspicion none of them may be compatable.

the dist is just the normal 2 wire magnetic pickup,

but need a NON ECU controlled module to go with it.

there must be a reason why, people use modified 4K dizzys over the bolt in 3a option. Palmside auto in hoon hay do them for like 250

I did get told early honda igniters can be used for this setup. With the 2 wire magnetic pickup does the pink one have power and white is the signal to the igniter?? I can maybe email you more pics if you want to Matt. Also there is the option of using the 4a electronic dizzy's off a 4af carb'd motor. Might look into that if i can't find the 4k-u dizzy internals. 2e corolla internals are they the same? The igniter with the ballast resistor is the one possibly that i need, but to keep cost down i'm trying to use the bits out of my parts range.

Yes they would work and are probabl quite available.
Small square ones about the size of a packet of matches.

No and no. Neither are power, neither are earth,
Simply reluctor + and - and no way to tell which one is which with a scope,
but it will run either way.

Are they internal coil?

So they go into the igniter?? or to a coil as someone thought a coil with more than 3 ohms shouldn't be a problem.

Yes as far as i'm aware the ae9# 4af engines have internlal coil but will check that on our loan cars tomorrow when i'm back at work

Actually looked at an ae9#, seems the drive is a bit different as they are driven off the end of the camshaft, not on the exhaust cam on the front with the gear
