4age throttle problem

Postby starley4age » Sun Jan 10, 2010 4:39 pm

Hey im a long time reader first time posting,

I have a 4age redtop smallport that i have rebuilt. Before rebuilding the engine it ran fine no problems, but now it just bogs down through the rev range, untill 4k where it picks up in acceleration but still seems as if it is bogging just not as bad. If i ease on the accelerator its ok but as soon as you try and go past a quarter throttle it just bogs down and go nowhere. Have reset the timing numerous times and hasnt seemed to make a difference. Replaced plugs, leads, dizzy rotor and cap but no change. What i did notice was the timing retards 10-15 degrees when it boggs down, and it seems to be running rich.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cleaned out the throttle body, jumped up in revs a little but didnt fix the problem, may have to source a tps. Just difficult finding parts

When you set the ignition timing, did you set it to 10 deg BTDC with
the diagnostic plug jumped ?? And if you did, did you notice the timing
change when you pulled the jumper out (engine running) ??

It is normal for the ECU to pull timing when you stomp the accelerator,
but it sounds like your base timing is retarded.

No i havent bridged the diagnostic plug, wasnt sure weather i needed to. In saying that my loom as been cut and i believe the diagnostic plug was removed, am i wanting to bridge e1 and t1 on the ecu when setting timing ?

Yeah - jump the plug to get base timing...
ALSO - make sure throttle is totally closed, aircon (yeah right) is off - otherwise it won't give you base timing.
Been there done that - tore my hair out until I worked it all out!
Good luck

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Then forget then light for once and time it so that it runs well: advance for high fast & smooth idle and only pings/detonates/spark knocks when being abused: trying to accelerate in 3rd/4th from 2000rpm.

Tried timing tonight, using this ecu pinout diagram
http://club4ag.zeroforum.com/zerothread?id=62705

I earthed t1 straight to earth rather than e1 would this make a difference?
Once earth the engine would not start, but when the earth was dissconected
it would start. And now the timing jumps all over the show when i accelerate,
but doesnt seem to bog down. Any suggestions on possible faults ?
