EOI: Supra brake upgrade (SW20)

Hey guys. Well I'm in the process of designing caliper adapters that allow JZA80 factory brake calipers to bolt on to the SW20 as I'm in need of a brake upgrade so I thought I'd make an offer to anyone else here that would be interested in doing the same.

This will allow you to run the massive 4 piston (front) 2 piston calipers (rear) and 325mm discs on your SW20. Caliper adapters will be CNC machined from billet alloy (thickness TBC).

Please note
-Only the adapters and any fitting hardware necessary are on offer here. You'll still need to source your own Calipers, Discs and Pads.
-You will need a minimum of 17" wheels to clear the calipers.
-There is an option to get the front adaptors only if you wish to keep the MR2 rear brakes.
-I'd recommend the rear upgrade for race cars ONLY or cars not using the stock handbrake arrangement. The Supra setup is different and will not work with the stock handbrake setup - you can use RX8 discs but that's for you to research on your own as what I'm offering is basically a mirror image of what I'll be using on my own car. So if you want front and rear Supra brakes - be weary of the fact that you'll need a hydraulic handbrake as well.

The only downside to this is having a set of wheels that will allow calliper clearence.Alot of wheels sold out there will not allow those big 4-pots to clear the inside of the wheels so be aware.

I've seen a few MR2s with this very upgrade in Japan should work great with the added stopping power in a light car.

As you know im keen, hope like $&#$% my BBS wheels have enough clearance :lol: :lol:

Wont run rears tho, means i cant bolt on small wheels for drifting/drags :(

Wolfkatz has already done such a bracket to run big discs with willwood dynalites.

If you do such an adaptor, will this be for the 91 brakes or 93?

If you do upgrade the fronts, you need to adjust your proportion valve, or else you'll end up locking your fronts and have WORSE than before braking.

Needless to say, I have an interest in this. But I've always been fascinated by dual calipers as well, I think they're "teh sex"

Edit: I see that you already know about the RX8 rear discs so I guess you're working off from what wolfkatz has done

It'll be for 93 brakes as that's what I run on my car. They may be able to be used on 91 as well but I can't guarantee that since I have no way of testing really.

I've seen Wolfkatz adaptor and I actually originally wanted one but after seeing the cost + factoring in shipping to NZ I knew there had to be a cheaper way to do it in NZ. If it does end up being $$$ then I'll still go the original route and get wolfkatz/phoenix power/hux racing adaptor kits.

I've got a Willwood adjustable brake bias controller in mine so that side of things is sorted. I think the bias will be a bit off even with both front and rear upgraded because of the different weight balance in an MR2.

well if you do make something up let us know. I fancy the bigger disc and relocating the factory caliper futher out idea, I have a huge ugly void with my 18" rims.... that void needs to be filled!

ionic, do you have the skills to adapt supra rotors and calipers to my LX80 mark 11?
also, how do you get a warrant with a brake bias adjuster-any problems?

You have PM. Not sure whether the bias adjuster is legal or not but the cert guy didn't take a 2nd look at it and once set I've left it alone anyway.

I've gathered that your SW20 is on the serious side of things if I remembered correctly, you have 93 brakes for now?

I think you should consider the relocation kit and bigger discs for now, it should be enough for your braking needs and not break the bank.

Hey ionic you wanna drum up the front sway bar brackets? Those should be cheap enough to make and we all should have a pair sometime down the road before it cracks our chassis, that's when it gets ugly.

Actually I've just seen them in magazine's over the years so I don't really have details of how they are set-up.But definitely in Japan it seems to be quite popular this upgrade.

Good thing about wilwoods is that the pads are cheap and you have a whole heap of diff compounds.
Wilwood calipers are not actually that expensive.

What are you paying for 2nd hand supra calipers?

I think you can get brand new Supra 4-pot callpers from Toyota for about $600.

damn, wilwoods are over 200 cheaper than that for the dynalites 4pots in whatever piston sixe you want. they were 196ea i think when i got them.

One thing I will say about those Supra 4-pots is on the downside they weigh seriously 7 kgs for each caliper.

On the positive though they are designed to pull up a full weight 1700 plus kilo car the Supra and were responsible for stopping the Supra from 100 kph in about 32 metres which when they were designed back in the 90s was a record.It was only surpassed by the set-up on the GT2 Porsche turbo in 2003 so when this is taken into consideration I feel $600 is quite a cheap price for the calliper you will be getting which has heaps of stopping power.

I used these callipers for 5 years and in a 8 lap runs at Manfield I'd see 24 190 plus KPH stops with excellent stopping no rotor pad or calliper failiure bar 1 when I melted a set of Mintex 1166 pads in 30 odd laps.

wilwood superlites are about the same price as the supra brakes and weigh 3kg. (~$650 a pair)

Superlites are also proven on many of the top race cars.

Dynalites of course are cheaper again but they are smaller but would still do the job on your mr2 easily. (~$470 pair)

I like the wilwood pad choice range and the price for a set of race pads :).

Another toyota OEM caliper that is good are the GT4 4 pots. They actually share the same bolt distance as corolla hubs and MR2 hubs, but you would still need to make adapters to bring them to the disc size you would be running.
