C52/C56 gearbox into an mr2

Postby Crown » Sun Jan 17, 2010 10:57 am

Hi all,
We're almost ready to put the engine (silvertop) in our aw11 track car and I need to decide on a gearbox for it.

The silvertop came with a c52 but the FD ratio is only 4:1 so i was thinking about using a c56 which is 4.3:1. I would have much rather used a 6 speed C60 out of the later model AE111 but didnt they have different axles to the 5 speed boxes? Could possibly just use ae111 front hubs on the rear though.

Also, i'd have to get an lsd for it and i dont think the c60's come out with an lsd? There seems to be plenty of cheap 2nd hand lsd's around for the 5 speeds but i'm assuming they dont fit the 6 speeds?

Any idea if ae111's can fit a 13" rim over the front brakes?

Geez that'd be a squeeze.
If it's S/S, they can only go down to a 15 inch rim (bigger brakes).

So this one will be LSD? I'm not going to buy it, but good to know if they do or do not exist 8)

its pretty clearly stated as being non-lsd....i've seen a few 6 speed boxes and none have been lsd. On the otherhand AceSniper is right, i looked into it and all bzr's came standard with a 6 speed spd lsd box.

I think i'll just buy a blacktop with gearbox out of a bzr and sell the silvertop!

Apparently the C160 is no where near is strong as the C52/56, maybe something to consider as a track car.

I would expect issues with thrashing a C160...

from what I've seen you're not really going to gain any pace with the six gears either. Best bet would be a 4.3 final drive C56 from an AE111, bloody strong (relative to other car marques anyway) and will bolt up + make you quicker

C160 is very weak.
I have rebuilt mine (after I blown it - by powering through a corner on yellow ultra grippy tarmac) , came all up under 1G, same price from new s/h gearbox at the time.
Never use button clutch on it. After rebuilt I chucked it out, put standard clutch back in, and gave the car to my sister  .

If you end-up using C160, it is imperative you use synthetic GL4/5 Oil.

AW11 will destroy a c160 if used as a track car!

the non lsd 6 speed's will be out of carib's and wagons.... that's if they are able to identify a helical lsd from a open diff....

The ones I've seen didn't. Probably was optional.

think it will make a big difference? or just say 0.1 seconds?

A C56 would be a $hit load faster, as the C160 would lunch itself all over the race track and you'd have to push it from there 8O
But seriously, C56, do it!

Hahaha, I see.
I'd say I much prefer the C56 over the C52 as well. Much nicer box.

I found my BZ-G (with C56) much smoother shifting than any C52 I've had (and I've had a lot of them).
It's very strong and it's a newer box also.

the plus for the c56 for me was how close the 3rd gear is to second compared to the c52
