20V fault for knock control in memory

AE111 trueno. Check light comes on when you hit around 3000rpm and retards the timing. Does have a broken engine mount. Was told it could be a timing, ignition or block issue. My question is are knock sensors on blacktops common for flaking out. I have replaced the sparkplugs. Leads and resistor lead to coil etc checked and OK

4: Yes knock sensors fail, 20v ones not as much as others, but they are newer than others (4ages that is)

I would believe a broken mount to possibly cause a false knock reading, but not cause a check light.

Head gasket is ok. Going to get a standard air box put back on this week.

Yes but if the ECU senses knocking and retards the timing and there is still knocking, it will bring on the light,

and it could be picking up knock from the broken mount.

Never heard of it before, but it is a definate possibility.

When I turn it on it revs freely and I can keep reving and the light doesn't come on. I can drive from the hutt valley to lower hutt slowly and it doesn't come on. Soon as I put my foot down a little bit. The light comes on straight away.

I've never seen the sense in looking for a new problem to fix when there's one there that you already know about and you couldn't be bothered fixing it.

I have only had the car for a week. Just repaired the whole body as some retard, thought it would be a good idea to paint the bonnet, mirrors, boot, petrol flap etc charcoal. Also have fixed most of the wiring. Some people shouldn't be allowed near cars. They also used dust caps for heater controls etc and the list goes on. Hence my original question to identify if the knock sensors give problems to try and narrow the possibilities down. As I usually drive 16valve 4age corollas and have no idea about 20valves. Thanks

Im almost 100% sure it wont be the engine mount. My gtz had the bolt out of the mount and used to have a large banging noise when taking off or changing gears. Never threw the engine light.

It would depend on what mount and where it is broken etc.
I wouldn't expect it to be that, as broken mounts are so so common on these, but this fault is not (at least not with that cause) But we do not know in what way the mount is broken.

For other cars I wouldn't rule it out, ime with 20v's I would be surprised if it is the cause, but as I stated we don't know in what way it is broken.
That said, the mounts needs to be replaced anyway

drain fuel & put some 98 in. Then go for drive. could be a fault with wiring & scorting somwhere

Even running on 91 won't cause this fault. I have known many people to run these on 91
