The top retainer should have a flat side, and the shock rod a corresponding flat.
so when you have it apart, you can hold the retainer to tighten the nut to a certain point. Then a slight tweak in the car to make sure it's tight.
It doesn't not need to be done up super tight.
I can do it up tight enough by holding the retainer whilset it's out of the car, but always check to see if I can get a bit more when it's inthe car. If the spring is trying to turn, it's tight enough.

By doing it how I said, ie undo that top nut before you do anything else. weight of the car helps

Contacted Evil_Si about getting him to help put them in, but I may in the end just try myself. How hard could it be...

I did a set of fronts for the first time the other week and it was all good, the only thing i forgot was getting the locator on the shock in the right place, like BZG was saying it kept spinning and i couldnt tighten it, a good thrashing wiggled it into place and i was all done.
Give it a go if you've got the tools, the only thing i was a bit dodge about was spring compressors. i kept checking that wherent captive cause i didnt want to get the spring in the face when taking the tophat off.

Nick/Tsoob is a legend. Had the car in and out in no time, would def go back again. Took it for a wheel alignment, needed new sway bar links, but ah well. These things happen.
