2001 Hiace Diff oil change, filler plug WELDED????

Postby sergei » Sun Feb 07, 2010 11:15 am

Hi,
I want to know if anyone encountered a welded filler plug on diff on a LH172 Hiace?

I mean, I went to drain all the oil, to only realise that filler plug does not come undone, because what it looks like that it was welded?

Is that normal?
What is the proper oil change process on those?
Or are they supposed to be "life-time" units? Why is the drain plug not welded then?

I have done a few oil changes on various Hiaces never to encounter some thing like that. That hiace have been in family for a few years and it is due to oil change in the diff.

Another question how do I reset T-belt light on digital odo dash on the hiace above?

Plan "B" right now is to measure amount of oil drained, and fill it from breather on top of the diff.

I have never heard of a welded filler before, can't be a factory thing as they wouldn't have installed a thread in the first place. Do you have a picture of it?

Normally you dump the oil from the bottom bung, reinstall it, undo top bung, fill with oil through the top bung until it comes out, then reinstall bung. Done.

On my diff I find it just too hard to fill the diff from the top bung underneath the car so I just pull a axle out and tip the car on a angle and fill it from there.

Two options to reset T-belt light

OPTION 1

1. Key off.

2 Press ODO reset button and hold, turn key to on, hold ODO button for ten seconds.

3. Release ODO reset button, press once and release within 3 seconds.

4. ODO will then read 10 or 15 depending if it's a 100,000km cambelt or 150,000km belt.

5. If 10 then press the odo button (on off) till it reads 20.

6. If 15 then press it until it reads 15 again.

7. Once it reads 15 or 20 press and hold ODO reset button until the ODO reads current km travelled.

8. Start engine and light will be out.

OPTION 2

1. Take out dash

2. On the back of dash there is a screw marked T-Belt with a empty hole next to it. Remove screw from t-belt hole and screw tightly into the second hole.

3. Turn the car on to IGN

4. The ODO area will display something like: "10 10"

5. Press the ODO/TRIP button to change it to: "10 20"

6. While IGN is still on, remove the screw and return it to it's original hole.

7. The dash should now be displaying the ODO, and the timing belt light will still be on.

8. Start the engine. The T-Belt light should go out.

thanks :).
first option worked for me. Only difference I had to dial the specific number (20 presses), then hold for 3 seconds until "odo" came back.

As for the diff, my theory is that some one in Japan stripped the thread on the filler and thought that going around the filler with mig is a great idea.

It is definitely welded (really good job as well).
So I filled it from the breather. 2.2L btw (compared to what came out and castrol site, seems to be consistent).
