Changing fuel filter in st185

Postby GT4-Addict » Sun Feb 07, 2010 12:48 am

Hi all.
My ST185 is starting to stutter a bit every now and then when it is under heavy load, it feels like it is running out of fuel, and i suspect the filter is blocked (By the looks of things i dont think its ever been done) so ive got a new one and im going to replace it tomorrow.

Are there any gremlins/common problems i should look out for when i do this? and is it sweet to just take out the old one and chuck a new one in, i dont have to bleed lines or anything do i?

Cheers!

Just unplug the battery or pull the efi fuse and let the car run until it dies before you change it

Car won't start with battery disconnected or EFI fuse removed :P. Disconnect the EFI fuse or fuel pump relay and crank the engine over for a few secs and that'll get rid of residual pressure in the lines.

It's all pretty straightforward. If it hasn't been done in a while, be careful as the banjo union can strip/crossthread quite easily. No bleeding needed - the fuel pump will prime and pressurise the lines when you go to start it. Turn the key from OFF to ON a few times without starting the car and check for leaks then go for gold.

Ive had a crack at it, but i dont stand a chance of being able to do it, i cant see any way of getting to the 14mm bolt that secures the fuel line at the bottom of the filter besides putting it up on a hoist. Has anyone had any experience with the fuel filter on a st185 gt4 with the 3sgte?

I was thinking i could wait till tomorrow when i can get acess to a pit but even then im not sure if im going to be able to get to it. Damn 3sgte engines!

it has been an exceptionally long time since I did this, but I remember it being hell on earth. I think I used a shortish ring spanner to undo the fitting on the bottom.

I would hazard a guess that your misfire is almost certainly due to HT leads or distributor cap/rotor. These things are notoriously problematic on the 3sgtes - especially if they're still the original items.

It's a lot easier from underneath but it IS possible from the top. Helps if you have a short ratchet spanner but otherwise a ring spanner and a lot of swearing and skinned knuckles will do it.

+1 on cap/rotor and leads - well worth doing if they're starting to get on in age and not that much $$$ either really.
