7afe stuttering under acceleration

Postby Bling » Fri Feb 12, 2010 8:08 pm

Asking on behalf of a mate.

He has a '96 Caldina (120k) and is having issues.

runs like a dream until the engine gets warm then starts to splutter and surge while cruising at a constant speed. if you accelerate the spluttering continues for afew seconds then the power comes in and all is good until you return to a cruise

He's cleaned out the throttle body and replaced plugs, cleaned and checked the injectors, and next on his list is leads. Before he splashes out on new leads I said i'd ask on here, as no point spending more $$ if its not needed. Leads may well be needed, but I know how temperamental the 4ages can be so I thought i'd see what people thought.

Thoughts? :)

Distributor cap/rotor either wet or arcing through.
Leads is another cause (very common for them to arc through the tube insulator).
Ask him to look at the engine bay while car is running in pitch black. If there is a light show then he can figure out what is arcing.
With tube arcing is little bit more difficult. Temporary measure would be insulation tape around and see if it is fixes the problem.

my 20v had arcing from one of the leads. basically car would run rough and then stall when doing this. Couldnt work out what was the cause as it was really random when it did it.
A mate had a look at the engine while i was trying to start it (was at night and very dark) and he could see the arcing.

What had happened (apart from the breakage in the insulation) was the lead was moving and when it got too close to the cam cover, it would arc onto that, or something very close to.

So until the new lead came from toyota, everytime it stalled i had to reclip the lead into its holder.

Small things can be a pain in the ass to work out sometimes.

Ok, no obvious arcing anywhere. He says its got coil packs and not a dizzy, any other things that might be causing the problem before new leads are purchased?

The coils die on them, also make sure it's running 98/95 they some times ping on 91 due to aggressive timing, the coils only really die when the leads or plugs aren't very good to start with so it would pay to check them too.

From memory the take the twin electrode plugs?
