st185 gt4 running a st215 3sgte

Postby jeremy » Sat Feb 13, 2010 3:55 pm

hey guys this is a wee project of mine
after running the bottom end due to a lack of oil (turbo failed up the bush)
I priced up the rebuild parts, forged pistons, rods ect and I were up to 2K before I put a spanner on it, and its still old tech
so I found a st215 auto motor 130ks for 1.2k

the motor bolts it fine, exhuast is a bit different and the st185 alt needs the threaded boss drilled out so the 215 bolt will go through it
also the bigger inter cooler hits the bonnet slightly

wiring wasnt so easy, stripping the st185 ecu loom out of the car loom wasnt much fun
the auto st215 loom is very basic hardly anything needed to be taken out

it starts and runs fine, but idles very low once its hot, dont ask me what it idles at as the rev counter signals are different

theres no air leaks and I assume the fuel pressure is correct

these motors are a beast pulls harder off boost than any other 3s ive driven
I dont know why people bother with the gen 2's

thanks
Jeremy

also give crispy02 sh@t untill he gets his damn ae86 going!!!!!

Because Gen 2's can make 350hp without having to worry about the bottom end
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Technically it is same technology as 1986 ST165, mechanically wise.
Yes, ST215/246 are superior in stock form for conversion (if your old engine is blown and you have cheap/free ST215/246 engine with all the bits and pieces).
But to build up into something with moderate power, it is cheaper to do with Gen1/2.
Even with Gen1 3SGTE it is possible to achieve same power as ST215/246 for less money and hassle than a conversion.

LOL what's the point of this topic? As far as I can see it's just some dude going on about how awesome his car is with a relatively stock engine in the engine bay...Try to extract decent power out of that engine and then let us know how "superior" or "bang for buck" it is.

PS: All 3SGTE's are old technology ;) regardless of what's bolted to them to keep up with the times, underneath it all, they're still a design that dates back to the mid 80's.

PPS. This isn't a tech question.

What ECU are you using? Might be missing load inputs from auto trans/aircon/powersteer which can all cause a dodgy idle. I'm assuming you used the auto st215 ecu.

Unless you used the ST215 Power steer pump (which has a pressure switch for load sensing that the ST185 doesn't), and added the A/C demand sensing from the ST185 then chances are that it will be idling lower because it's doesn't have the necessary feedback to determine engine load.

As long as the idle speed is within the target range then the ECU won't try to increase it based on that alone, and the target range is quite low (<700rpm IIRC)
