Toyota Curren engine fault (diagnostic 22)

Postby baker » Mon Feb 15, 2010 4:18 pm

Hey guys,

I'm having trouble with my Curren and i'm not too sure what it is.

My 'engine check' light is coming on (diagnostic code 22, Engine coolant sensor) Intermittantly.
The light generally comes on about 2k, and when it hits 3.5k it limits revs and speed. It seems to occur more often going up hill and in the afternoon when its hotter, it seems to occur less when going down hill.

I've trauled through the FAQ's section and could'nt find anything, but forgive me if i've missed it!

I've had it in and out of the mechanics over the last week and a half and still don't know what wrong with it, they've tried different things, it's worked on test drives, but as soon as I pick it up it starts faulting again.
They have checked the coolant and cat converter but this has'nt helped. They've replaced the sensor but that didn't stop the fault appearing either.

I know someone else who has the same problem with their car and again, don't have a fix for it (although theres is less frequent).

Has anyone here had this problem before? or know how to fix it?

any help would be greatly appricated.

Cheers!

The problem could be very obvious one.
Check the Water Temperature Sensor (WTS) connector/cabling first.
The WTS is located on coolant elbow, just above gearbox (the elbow is attached to head and radiator hose is attached to it).
The sensor in question will be two wire green plug.

Check for discontinuity in wiring from sensor to the ECU.
Check actual sensor (measure resistance or swap from another vehicle).
Try another ECU.

Those sensors some times play up and read -60c to the ecu for a fraction of a second. The only way you can see it is with a diagnostic tester. Try another sensor in there and see how it goes.

They some times stall when this happens too.
