Gearbox axle seals question

Postby Akane » Fri Feb 19, 2010 4:12 am

Hi, I am having a bit of trouble with axle seals.

This is a picture of the seals in question

Image

1) Which part of the seal does the actual sealing? The outer raised lip pushing against the surface of the axle? Or the inner circumference pushing against where the spline is?

2) When I fill the gearbox up with gearbox oil, the shafts will be submerged in oil? Or does it not raise above where the shafts are?

3) I just don't understand how something so crude, is able to seal all that oil (if it's submerged), with all that engine and gearbox vibrations. It seems to me it's like trying to hold oil with a fishing net... it just doesn't seem like a very oil-tight seal, with all that movement and vibration going on there.

4) I do see "grooves" just before where the splines meet (kind of like the inside of a gun barrel) Here, and from the direction it looks like it pulls oil towards the center while the wheels are going fowards. If the seals are doing their job, why do they need such design?

I think its the inner that does the sealing.

the outer is a dust cap, the inner seal that is angled inwards does the sealing

BTW seals do not work well when fully submerged, or there is pressure inside.
You will find that if filled to the right level, most seals will be only just touching oil or not at all.

Okay I'll be taking the axle off once more and check the damn seals.

Sergei if that's the case, I've only managed to get 2.5L into my E153, and it's dripping like crazy already, a big puddle about 200ml came out instantly.

That's why I'm all confused. If I put the recommended 4.2L in, the seals will be submerged, and I don't see how the submerged seals will work at all, a bit like main seals in an engine.

Are the seals new or old?
What kind of gearbox is it? what vehicle etc.
4.2L sounds like alot unless its an auto?

You cant put too much more than you are supposed to in as it flows out because the hole is on the side...

well there are two holes but you are supposed to have the side one open when you fill it so you know when its full

4.2L is correct. E153's are pretty big gearboxes.....

(2.6L is the capacity for the non turbo MR2 boxes)

It's in the Toyota service manual. My gearbox has always taken a shade over 4L before it starts seeping out of the fill hole. I've never really had axle seals just randomly start leaking - it's always been because they got damaged during axle removal/installation. I just make a point of replacing them every time the axles are out now. They only cost like $10

Mine takes about 4L too.

I would bet good money his seals are rooted... i was there when the axles went in and if i may liken it to sex it was more like a drunken first time in the back of a levin with rage against the machine cranked up to 11 as opposed to some romantic love scene with barry white playing in the background.

Old, it's a second hand gearbox, I blew up my first mint one (gnomes somehow managed to undo my oil drain bolt + motorway speeds = almost kissed the barrier when it locked up).

And 4.2L is according to the manual.

I think it was more like an elephant trying to have it's way with a kitten.

Last time I've put it in, I used the lower suspension arm as leverage, brake disc as handles, and rammed that thing so violently I'll put a jackhammer to shame. I mean, that's the only way to get it in... or is it? :P

8O Kenny! LOL. You need a bit of force but not jackhammer force haha that'll damage the CV's (and axle seals)
