Idling a fresh engine.

Postby TRD_ZERO » Thu Feb 18, 2010 3:57 pm

Im wanting to idle my newly built 4agte to check for leaks and see if the fan comes on and whatever else. How long can i let it idle for before i actually take it out for a drive.
Ive been told i shouldnt let it idle but i dont want to take it for a drive incase of serious leaks and what not.

My suggestion would be to warm it up a few times before you take it out. Give the rings and seals a chance to sit right. You can always give it some light revs on the spot. I wouldn't be driving it had been warmed up a few times so everyhting can be sitting where it needs to before you leave the driveway.

Err - no

Idle it only long enough to check for leaks then DRIVE IT.

Don't labour it - but rings NEED pressure to seal - that's just how they work.

Don't thrash the living crap out of it - but don't nanna around!

Start her up, take it easy till it warms up then take it for a moderate drive.

I'm not saying that idling or low revving wont work - but you'll get better results if you do the above.

As long as you want, but keep it up a bit, 15-2000, so the cylinders & rings get a lot of lube thrown at them.

+1

if you're too worried about driving it, at least put a zip tie or something on the throttle so it revs to about 2000-2500rpm while you're looking for leaks etc

the rings dont need revs, they need load to bead in, drive it like you stole it after you check for leaks,

I thought this was just general operating practice, not just limited to running in motors :D
