first gear rev limiter???

Postby Tha_INS » Sun Feb 21, 2010 10:32 pm

Hi didnt have much luck on primera forums with this question so here goes...

I test drove a Pulsar GTI(sr18de) the other day and for some reason it wouldn't let me rev past 6000rpm in first gear. Tried second and it revved sweet till redline just seems not to let me do it in first...

Has anyone ever had this prob with any car? How can it be solved?

Cheers if anyone can shed some light on this...

Was it an auto with it locked into either of the gears?
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

nah manual....me and a mate both tried and its like hitting a rev limiter it just keeps bouncing off at around 6k when redline is at 7.5

They do that, my mate had a VZ-R that would do the same in neutral or if you had the AC on and possibly if the car was cold. Its a protection thing as far as I can tell.

My ITR won't vtec when its cold either.

That's not normal. A GTI should go to redline in every gear regardless of engine temp (not that it's a good idea to try it out on a cold engine). Something's definitely wrong there. Does it do it in neutral? How about in first gear but with foot on the clutch and just free revving? What did the owner say about it? Check for ECU fault codes to start with.

VTEC/VVL is a different thing altogether. The ECU doesn't engage the system unless certain conditions are met (engine up to operating temp, oil pressure within certain range, throttle position over a certain amount, vehicle speed etc etc).

The engine will still rev to redline without VTEC/Neo-VVL - it just won't switch cam profiles. This guy's problem is that it's physically refusing to rev over a certain point like it has a lower rev limiter in 1st gear or launch control.

Wouldn't surprise me. Higher gearing means less possibility of damage through possible valve bouncing.

Lower limiter is very common on low speed.
Nothing to do with gear, as ECU can only guess what gear it is in (of course newer cars are different story).

For example even AE101 will have lower limiter if there is no signal from speed sensor. Various cars will have it as low as 4000rpm if car is not moving.

I drove a honda legend V6 auto that wouldn't redline in 1st gear, If it could get to redline the car speed would have been 70kmh if I remember correctly.

Can't remember what revs it was but its max speed in 1st was 50kmh, Maybe similar thing?

A similar thing happened to me yesterday. I pulled out to overtake, and hit 9000rpm in 2nd (I thought I was in 3rd when I pulled out). I thought ae101's were supposed to rev cut at 8,000.

When I've free revved it in the past, in neutral its hit rev cut/bounce at 7,500-8,000
Ending up with spare parts in assembling things since 1983

Yep N14's definitely don't do it and the 1 N15 I've driven didn't do it either. I'd say there's something wrong with that one.

Yes thats what I thought.....was jusy hoping someone had a quick fix for it since it drives pretty well apart from that one problem
