Mazda Issues

Not Toyota related, but the mrs has a 94 Familia with a 1500 sohc carb motor in it. It's idling quite high (1200-1300rpm) and im assuming its running rich as hell, because its using heaps of gas (300km /40l) and the exhaust is full of black soot. I dont know much about these motors but have recently replaced plugs, air cleaner, fuel filter and done an oil/filter change and its made no difference. Short of taking it to a garage with a gas analyzer, is there anything I can do to try fix this?

Any ideas??

Thanks in advance,
Shay.

is it carbed or Centre Point Injected? I'm guessing most likely that later and that is where the problem lies

I am not sure if it applies to your car, but some of the single point injections units incorporate a hotwire AFM into the throttle body housing. You might need to give it a clean with carb cleaner.

Nissan models have that are are very bad for broken connection inside the unit from the AFM board to the plug.
