92 Auto Windom 3.0g - Under powered.

Postby nzryan » Thu Feb 25, 2010 11:29 pm

Hey guys,

I recently brought a 92 Windom 3.0g, everything on it is fine and it's in very good nic (140k's)

I just had the transmission serviced and the guy said the box was pretty good and gave it a good going over.

The only issue it has is a leak on the rocker cover seal, not important but something I intend to fix.

Anyways to the real problem, in the mornings, I turn her on, back her out and drive up the road to an intersection. During this startup she is running fine but when you accelerate its very very heavy and slow, even with the pedal down to the floor it just won't go for it.

Now it is a heavy car and I don't want to trash it, but its almost dangerous getting across the main road to join traffic.

Once it gets over 45k ish it goes for it normally, but very unresponsive under that speed, after 7-10 mins it starts to behave normally.

I noticed this is happening after work too, car sitting in sun for 8ish hours, but responds a bit faster.

On searching these forums and some others, a lot of people have mentioned this issue, and one forum (I think here) mentions to check the pipe between the AFM and the Throttle.

I did this today and found that the throttle side of the pipe which has the metal tightener was loose, and I think the pressure may be getting out of here causing the drag feeling.

I have bolted it up tight and will test tomorrow morning and see how I go.

If not, what else could I have a tinker with before getting someone to have a real good look at it.

Diagnostics scanner picks up no engine codes.

I have done a lot of searching and cannot find a solution, thanks guys :)

See if warming it up before leaving for work helps.

The main reason to check this pipe is to check that it hasn't split.

Hey all,

Well took it for a drive this morning from cold and it ran perfect, a wee bit sluggish for a few meters but this will be due to it being cold and most cars are like this, spesh a heavy one like this windom.

The pedal is where it made the differeance, it now cannot be floored otherwise it shoves the engine into rape mode and guns it, I didnt want to test this but gave it a small boost up the road.

Will keep my eye on it, doing seals this weekend and going to have a real good going over in the bay for anything outstanding.

Cheers!

Hey,

Is that something like condensation in the mornings and so engine burns it off for the first few mins when turning on in morning?

Or do you mean since me tightening up the pipe?

Thanks

Have you checked that the flexi bend isnt cracked/split? Real common problem with these, will make it run like a pig

Hey, haha no problem.

Umm yea I checked the pipe and its fine, had a rough feel of the bottom but need some time to take it fully off for a decent go over.

Is it fine to take this off fully and just put back on? theres no air issues like blocking the ends with a rag etc to keep the dust etc out?

if its cracked you'll most likely find it to be so between the accordion sections, so best to take it off for a good inspection.

should be fine unless your engine bay is really dusty, best to clear away any large bits of loose debris or whatever.

Hmmmmm

Has been going good so far, noticed it was a weee bit slow this morning but that might be because I took off the entire pipe and check it for splits, its fine however I seemed to create a small one at the end but thats behind the strap tightner so should not get air anyways.

Im keen to get it looked over anyways, so rocker gets fixed next week and then good inspection. Hope its an easy fix!

May seem like a silly question, but when is the last time the plugs/leads were done?

Have no idea, new owner, last owner never did em.

Spose its good to have them done.

If I wanted someone to take a look at the car overall performance wise, do I go mechanic or a tuning specilist? im keen to find out why the thing is just running like a dog.

Take it to a mechanic and get it serviced (oil, oil filter, leads, plugs, fuel filter, air filter etc) and get them to check it over as well. It may cost a bit but the car will be running mint (assuming it's taken to someone that knows what they're doing)
