The early Legacys were well known (deservedly so!) for noisy tappets and soft heads. Mostly fixed by the time they started on the Impreza.

Other thing to watch with Subarus is the factory Bilsteins. When they leak and are due for a rebuild, its $$$ time.

I can't say what I want to say but make sure you have someone reputable when it comes to repairing them because much like most turboed Subies they'll be needing fixing at some stage.

A good mate of mine owned a 2003 version 8 wrx for a while. Cusco coilovers and some nice cn28's (I think thats what their called)

Totally stock engine, exhaust.

Wicked car, handled awesumly , good on gas, so nice to sit in.

Only dissapointing thing was the speed. In a straight line it was line ball with my old type R integra.

I would deffinatly own one myself.

You want to look at version 4+ as they got MUCH nicer interior and engine changes as well.

May I suggest an STI instead? WRXs are generally not slow, but not fast either. STI on other hand go really well.

About 2-3 months ago I helped my friend install STi shocks/springs into his WRX wagon. Afterwards, he let me take it for a drive and I could not believe how slow it was. Well, I guess slow is not the right word, but overall it felt pretty weak for a turbo car.

With the way certain..cultures..seem to latch onto WRX's, you'd think they actually had some decent level of pull!

WRX: most over-rated vehicle ever?

Yeah plain WRX's have never been that flash really. Quick enough, but nto what I'd call fast. STi's are a much better car.

Well if you think about it, a WRX has about 170kw at the flywheel...if factory figures are correct.

And with fulltime 4wd sucking up a big chunk of that, lets just say 20% (could be more or less...) that works out to be 136kw at the wheels.

They weigh 1240kgs ...ish

Thats only 109kw per tonne at the wheels.

A good blacktop makes about 100kw's atw and roughly 1000kgs. So not much in it really.

My old workmate had a DC2 SiR and with a SAFC, some name brand headers and a type-r exhaust he cranked out 160whp, thought that was pretty good going!

Meh, its quick enough with out spending money on it. One of the reasons I brought it.

Is it boosting correctly? WRXs seem to have this issue where because they're all old, every second one has had the factory boost solenoid kerplode causing it to run wastegate pressure. Because when I first got mine I agree with you, it was suprisingly slow. Turned out it was running 7psi instead of 12.5. Got a boost tap and chucked it up to ~13psi and it's pretty decent now.

I'd have to agree with you though, compared to the STi the WRX is a bit of a let down.

In any case, even when it was broken it was faster than my celica was :P. Celicas really are whales.

But your forgetting the massive amounts of torque a blacktop 4age has as well ;-)

I thought WRX's had 160kw at the flywheel, STI's are 205kw? Most stock STI's get about 160-170kw@wheels. But dont take much to get over 200kw@wheels

They arent miles ahead of other performance cars out there, Im sure a DC2 teg would possibly give mine a good run for its money if not beat it, but at least I'm not driving a honda :wink:

Haha yeah Blacktops are pretty awesome, infact I bet they are the reason the motorway needs to be resurfaced so often.

I thought WRX's had 160kw at the fly too but I googled it and it came up with 17*ish which seemed a bit too close to the STI's 206kw (205?).

I really liked your STI when you took me for a drive ages ago they certainly have some balls and yours looked to have been well looked after which did make me think maybe it would be something I'd like. Although Im thinking of getting an S15 later this year instead. And they only have a piddly 180 odd kw's :lol:
