Too close?

Postby cat007 » Mon Mar 01, 2010 4:54 pm

Hey all

Tonight I'm going to make some heat shields to protect some brake hard lines, and my brake master cylinder and my clutch master cylinder and some power steering lines that are close to hot exhaust parts.

My main problem is where my waste gate is compared to 2 of my brake lines. See pic below.

Image

The pic doesn't really show too much as I took it for another purpose. but you can at least see how close my wastegate is to a couple of my brake lines. The closest point is probably about 10mm away.

I've got some heat shield stuff that's the same as what Matt's using (sorry Matt for stealing you pic :))

I'm in the same boat as him for the waste gate pretty much.

My question is this; is this heat shielding material going to be good enough? And should the gap be the same on either side? Or should the shield be closer to the hot item or the one I'm trying to keep cool?

Thanks for your advice :)

That heat shield stuff is very good, but you do need an air gap. Closer to the source of heat would be better

Thanks for that

yeah I was intending on an air gap but wasn't sure which side should have the biggest. I'm still unsure how I'm going to attach the heat shield. I guess the normal thing to do is to bolt it to the engine bay somewhere. Rather than attaching it to my master cylinder somehow, or the wastgate

man, that red engine bay pic is awesome!
im going to wrap up the pipe to wastegate with exhaust wrap as well.

Did it not melt the way you had it before with no heat shield?

haha that is a pretty sweet pic man!

Yeah mine's all wrapped up to the wastegate.

Previously my wastegate wasn't so close - as this master cylinder is about an inch longer - and has the hard pipes coming from the turbo side - before they were facing the outside of the car and didn't pose a problem.

I'm just annoyed about how I've done it - as it means the heat shield cant be just straight up like you've done. It'll have to curve around the wastegate and then somehow curve over the top as well....which is going to be tricky to give a flat piece of heatshield two different bends :P

I would look at wrapping the lines with exhaust wrap. That could also possibly help along with the heat shield. As heat still passes through that shield after a while

Wouldn't that keep heat in though?
