st215 GT-T Caldina knocking - who in chch can i take it to?

Postby steve74 » Sun Mar 07, 2010 5:32 pm

Hey guys, it sure is a long time since ive been on this forum. Anyway to make a long story short my missis was about to take the 3 hour trip home from Christchurch this afternoon when the Caldina started knocking from the rear. She called the AA and they took it back to their depot and put it on the hoist but couldn't tell her what it was but suggested the rear transmission or drive shaft. They advised her not to drive it home. Shes on a flight as i type this and our car is stuck in Christchurch. Can Anybody suggest the most likely cause and who am i best to take it to in Christchurch for a reasonable reliable repair??

thanks, steve

Several Caldina owners have had them knocking in the rear, and found the culprit to be rear wheel bearing. I think the left has a tendancy to be the casue? Someone who's had that wil prob see this soon and confirm

Cheers man, i thought for sure it would be a wheel bearing from what she described but surely the AA monkeys would rule that out pretty quickly? maybe its not that straight forward on the Caldina? its a pain in the bum being 250km away from it. I will have to put my faith in complete strangers to get it sorted.

ok, now that the missis is home i get the full story. She thought the knocking was from the rear. the AA reckon it was from the front. But it only happens when turning. She couldn't remember if it was when turning both ways or one particular way. ??

the 4wd drive shafts will have some sort of fancy CV joint. Im guessing its why it happens when turning. I cant say that Ive spent too much time underneath it.

She also mentioned that each time she drove it that it didnt do it straight away, seems to be after driving it for a while that it makes the noise.

thanks for the help. I got to chch this morning and drove it down to the big car park by the westpac trust centre. It was fine in a straight line and not a problem when turning left, but when you turn hard right the back left makes a DONK, DONK, DONK, DONK noise untill you straighten up again.

I jacked the whole back end up and took the wheels off hoping to find a bit of slop in the hub or drive shaft but both sides felt the same. I took the disc and caliper off and it felt fine. Checked exhaust clearance from the drive shaft - all ok? It was fine under hard acceleration and breaking so i opted to just drive it home to the coast. It was fine. I drove it like normal and it never missed a beat. It only does it when you turn the stearing wheel more than 30 degrees. So its fine on the open road but around right hand corners and roundabouts DONK, DONK, DONK.........ya get the picture!!

Will drop it to my mechanic tomorrow. its got to be either a wheel bearing or CV joint. Either that or the rear diff has issues when loaded up on the left hand side.

Actually it sounds more like the CV to me. Mine made the same noise but with accompanied suspension bouncing, failed a WOF because of a "worn shock" :?

yeah, its real strange though, every now and then it sounds like its up front? the missis and the AA both reckoned it was up front but you cant feel it through the steering wheel ? and the first time i heard it i was 95% it was left rear.

Im picking my mechanic will start with a wheel bearing.

Genuine parts best i presume? expensive?

oh, one other thing i noticed. I dont drive the car too often, only when we go on holiday, but once i hit 120kph the whole car and stearing wheel shudders like crazy. I know it didnt used to do that so im not sure its related to the current probllem or the wheels just need a good ballance.

More likely a wheel needs balancing.

And No sir, it wasn't the CV.

Im almost too embarrassed to tell you guys.

I took it to my mechanic and he was of the opinion that it would be a wheel bearing. Once he drove it he agreed that it was definitely left rear but was more than just a worn bearing. He too put it on the hoist and could not find anything wrong. Out of curiosity he removed the left wheel to see a shiney patch on the rear strut. He had a look on the wheel and there was a lead wheel weight which had moved and was whacking on the strut when going around tight corners.

I shit you not!!!! The rays volk wheels i have on the car have adhesive weights but for some reason there was also some crimp on lead weights? The missis hit a pothole at some roadworks when going into Christchurch which must have dislodged the weight. I swear that it sounded a lot worse than a lead weight hitting the strut, my mechanic was gobsmacked, when he drove the car he said you could feel the back end jumping up and down.

well ya live and learn, Thanks to everyone for the help.
