W5X gearbox rebuild

Postby .: SR Coupe :. » Tue Mar 09, 2010 8:55 pm

Hi,

I have a W50 5spd that i'm putting into my RN41 Hilux to replace the 4spd column shift. I want to rebuild it with seals and bearings why I have the chance.

Just wondering who has knowledge with this kind of thing to point me in the direction of the parts?
I have found NZ Bus & Truck that can source a full rebuild kit for $420! Surely can be done cheaper... Is it a case of removing bearings and seals and matching up new ones at the likes of Saeco Bearings/BNT etc? And gasket kits available or make my own?

Any pointers?
Cheers guys
Ash

that sounds pretty reasonable, bearings aren't cheap.

cost me over $100 trade for two bearings for my silvia box

I have a W56 apart in my garage at the moment.

Remove the bearings and take them to saeco. But you'll look at about 300-400 for the 6 bearings. Make the gaskets yourself out of paper, but make sure they are the correct thickness as the clearances may cause issues, someone will be able to confirm this.

When you remove the selectors make sure you remove the selector fork, ring and its innards as one, otherwise you'll find 3 little keys flying around your garage as they are spring loaded.

best advice I can give is, take your time, its tricky, but not difficult.

Tools you'll need:
snap ring pliers.
pulley puller with extension things.

don't use cable ties though, hahaha i just couldn't find bolts to fit the holes is all, ended up with about a dozen in each. Just an idea of getting that main bearing off if you don't have heat like I don't, but be warned, you gotta have a big power bar to do it this way.

Thanks for the replies Burningangel and Quint, gives me some perspective of it and the prices I should expect to pay- Makes the 420$ I got quoted seem ok now.

Interesting to hear your thoughts Quint seeing you are in the middle of doing a rebuild, any more tips let me know !

To be truthful man, if the box isn't whining i'd leave it alone. Only fix what is broke. They are pretty easy gearboxes to get out.
