ae111 trueno 3sgte conversion???

Postby mlewis » Thu Mar 11, 2010 6:58 am

Looking at putting a 3sgte into my ae111 trueno, also looking at running it RWD as a mate of mine is a fabricator by trade but dont know what else i'd need besides obviously the engine, celica gearbox modified to 100% RWD, rear drivetrain from a celica, and bigger fuel pump to handle the extra demand. The other option is to use all drivetrain from the celica and run it AWD. What are your guys thoughts? Am wanting something unique and different but just need some help ironing out the finer details and would love to hear some feedback if somebody as already tried this kind of setup or as one already running

You will need a vast amount of money and knowledge.

Then you will end up with a crater where your bank account was, and a car that is likely slower than something costing 1/4 as much money to buy (eg: Supra).

I suspect Mr Dunn will be along shortly to scare you with facts from such rear drive attempts.

DO IT!!

would be awesome to see!have you seen the one on youtube?i think it runs a caldina rear subframe + 4wd. but rwd won't be too hard to achieve from there...

i've been thinking about this myself for later down the track with my ae101 and there is actually quite a bit of room above the subframe to modify and fit in a diff etc. just make a custom 4 link rear end using roughly the same geometry and just get all the bits out of the way. might not be that simple but i'm sure it can be done with the right skills. 8)

would love to see a ae111 doing heli's!!

good luck

And I have even got the a full GT-Four rear running set up and prop shafts that you can use :P

Will be a big job but anything is possible.

if your bank account is limitless then go for it.

otherwise dont touch it with a ten foot pole. you could probably buy yourself 6 ST205 Celicas for the price it would cost you to do it. (that could be an exaggeration...maybe not...who knows!)

It is certainly doable.... As anything is with enough time, effort and $$$$.
then more $$$$.

You will need to redesign and fabricate:
front suspension and steering
rear suspension
floorpan
firewall

it is a major reconstruction rather than a modification.

celica gearbox modified to 100% RWD,

That comment suggest's to me that you will need a LOT of help to do this, therefore increasing your budget by a lot.

If you want it RWD, don't use GT4 gear. Mount the engine north/south and make it a proper RWD.

Whatever you choose to do......Read Revhead's post....now do it again........and again......just once more for good measure

It is certainly doable.... As anything is with enough time, effort and $$$$.
then more $$$$.

Then add more $$$$$

Just buy a rex or an evo and be done with it  I know I would. But then, that's probably because I don't see the attraction of pouring $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ down the drain just so you can say your car is unique.

How much money have you set aside?

Double it - and then add another zero

Then you'll start to become a little closer as to how much it'll cost.

Chucking in a 3SGTE and leaving it FWD - relatively easy. - still get a Celica to start with.

Chucking in a 3SGTE and making it 4WD - very, very difficult (you will need modify body to fit 4WD subframe, perhaps frankenstein a levin with celica together). - Get a GT4, STI or Evo. Money you would be spending will get you a nice near new STI.

Chucking in a 3SGTE and making it RWD - extremely difficult, and will be a dog to drive - suspension and chassis is not designed to handle RWD. Put it this way - you far better off saving money and buying something that works out of the factory - that also will be a very nice car (like 370Z for example). Get an altezza and turbo it.

so yes it can be done. i think it is doable with a decent budget and skills.

if you build a mega strong cage tied to both front and rear strut towers and also pick up the mounting points for whatever subframe you use the chassis should hold up alright. as to how it would perform - who knows.

would take a lot of development to get it to a track going state and $$$$

It was done to a ee90/ae91 hatch a while back, 4wd + 3sgte and looked completely stock.

Last I heard it was in Wellington but that is going back about 2 yrs, its a member on here but not sure if he still has it though. I think it was originally built by someone in Auckland.

Just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should be done.

All that money and you'd only have a small version of a GT4 Celica.

AE115 Carib complete rear suspension would be the go, swap the diff for GT4 along with the axles.

rear chassis rails will need new subframe mountings and spare wheel well will most likely need to be made smaller.

Its quite popular to do the 3SGTE in the Corolla 2 door, not the Levin, I asuume they have the same chassis or similar anyways. Seen it done plenty in Europe, Greece and Italy, Rome area.
