Just randomly or has it happened to a few? Might have had a hairline fracture when the plugs were installed and it's vibrated into a complete crack?

I had a bluetop with ignition timing ridiculously out which cracked a bunch of plugs.

theres a difference between a standard factory ECU and a tuned factory ECU though isint there...

All you need it too much timing advance. That'll make anything detonate with boost.
Knocklinks work well, flashing lights.

you dont need an aftermarket ecu on most nissans,for example, with the right software and a tuning cable you can tune them just like you would a link ecu.

the local tuner has a R32 GTR running over 1100hp on a factory RB26 ecu

pity the driver cant seem to get it to run good times.

on the other hand a toyota ecu can be reflashed, but not tuned on the fly making it pretty much useless

To 'chip' Toyota ecus and some Nissan (sr20), they need to have Daughterboards added, and then jumpers changed on the original ecu so that it talks to the Daughterboard.

I had a very good custom tune done on an sr20 using a daughterboard, and have had a Mines ecu in a jzz30 which I opened up and had a look at.

Unfortunately the daughterboards are usually pretty expensive as a singleton purchase, and then to install (often multilayer ecu boards) and tune, makes them close to as expensive as an aftermarket ecu, which has the advantage of being a known quantity, and can be tuned by any old workshop.

But if the returned factory ecus were so good, why arn't all the top racing teams using them, how come most race cars I look into have a Motec?

well i spose to be more specific, a road car doesnt generally need all the extra features that an aftermarket ecu offers, like launch control, gear selectable boost control, datalogging etc.

im a big fan of aftermarket ecus, but for say a skyline roadcar i don't see the point spending all the extra money for an ecu with extra features you dont need/wont use.
