Care to explain to this to me please?

Tire in question: Nankang NS-2. 235/40/R18
Rim: 5Zigen black racing 18 x 9J (So it's stretched but not crazy boso styles, just mildly stretched.
Age: around 5 years, was kept outside on the car but off the ground for 2.5 years. Was bought second hand, I only done about 1,000km's on them.

Story: I was fanging a right corner, then all of a sudden the tire popped (I didn't know that at the time), car went crazy sideways, did correct and didn't die. This tire is located at the rear/left, so it was taking most of the load during that corner.

Red arrow shows direction of wheel travel.

Is it because my tires are so old and crap that's why it ripped to shreads when I was fanging it, it couldn't handle the MR ness? Or did I hit something damn hard like a Ginsu 2000 that's causing it to rip apart? My rear/right wheel looks perfectly fine, while this one has random cut spots all over the place with the big ones as shown.

Needless to say the sidewalls are totally destroyed from this incident, I'm lucky that the tire didn't get rip off the rim and destroy my rims too.

WOW! I reckon you ran over some sharp stuff. I managed to run over a frikken razor blade once. My tyre went flat REAL FAST!
I only knew it was a razor blade cause the tyre guy found it rattling around in there when he pulled it off the rim.
Have you pulled the tyre off the rim yet?

Not yet, I'm still thinking if I should rip both tires off and put on my 2 x Dunlops spares I have, or buy 1 second hand tire to replace this dead one, not so sure if it's a good idea to run unbalanced tires on a MR2 with TEIN's

Nankang's are alright.

I think I must've ran over a lot of sharp things because there's a lot of little cuts all over the tire, but nothing on the right hand side.

The road where my tire popped has recently been sealed, but it still doesn't explain the big chunk that it took out.

I'd say also because they're second hand and have been unused for 5 years hasn't helped your cause either dude.
Tread looks pretty low and it's probably perished somewhat as well.

It could be, but doesn't explain why the other tire is sweet. :( From the patches of cuts, it looks like I've done a skid ontop of a cheese grater.


I tried to get the tire off myself (For a laugh), Goddamn 40 profile... can't break the bead with my own weight, even if I weight another 40kg's more I doubt it'll make a difference. I even had my arms up against a door frame to push myself down.........

Hahaha, classic. Tyre machines have shit loads of pressure to pop the bead. I'd doubt it if anyone here could do it with their weight.

I can't drive it over with the Wagon R, the factory kit hangs too low, if these were advanti's i'd do it, but not with 5Zigens..... I know they ain't exactly work or BBS, but still it ain't no DTM or Advanti, or drift R's...

Im with Gasman.....its Nankang! Even the guys at Hyper who sell them said the same thing to me years ago when I had to replace mine and then the wifes shortly after.

They are crap, stay well away from them!

one rangi way to break the bead is to get a thick plank of wood, rest it on the tyre on an angle, and drive a 4wd or similar heavy vehicle up onto it. then rotate and repeat

used this technique to do the tyres on my quad once, with the scoop of my mates digger and 3 tons of pressure. worked a treat until i pushed the rim in tooo far and crushed the rim like a coke can, she beat back out in the end though.
