throttle dash pot needed?

Postby deaf_rattle » Sun Mar 14, 2010 12:16 pm

THe dash pot hits my alternator.
Can i replace this with a new bracket to stop the throttle, or does it need to have the dash pot installed?

cheers

A dash pot is not the throttle stop, or at least is should not be.

It is there to slow down the end of the close of throttle for emissions.

There should also be a mechanical solid stop somewhere too,
so you should be able to remove the dash pot without issue.

Thanks Matt
You are right, just had another look and yes there is an adjustable stop for the throttle.

What does the dashpot for emissions?

I was told throttle would be unpleasant without the dashpot

it will snap shut alot more abruptly without the dashpot, so engine braking could be fierce at times.

i wasnt aware it was an emissions item, may help to mitigate over fuelling on sudden throttle closures

learnt all about it in the day, but was not interesting enough to remember about.

It is something to do with Nox emissions I think.

I have never run one on any of my cars anyway.

Most newer emissions type carburetor stuff would pop/backfire out the exhaust without one if their throttle was suddenly closed, like every gear shift. Some engines have a tendency to stall if the throttle doesn't come down slow. If you are a crude down shifter, with no rev match - just shove into gear, then you will have more drivetrain wear/abuse and should not get a lightweight flywheel.
If you don't have a problem with driveability or noise or crap into the atmosphere, then you don't need one.
