LVVTA standards amendments coming up?

Postby DeeCee » Fri Mar 12, 2010 7:00 pm

A friend was getting worked up over some new changes/amendments that may be introduced. He was talking to a workshop and they related how the cert guy was saying that, for example, height adjustable suspension and roll cages can only be used if you are registered to an auto club and do 3 track events a year.

Does anyone know of any amendments being introduced to the low volume vehicle certification standards?

Cheers

Only thing I know about is about Exhaust Emissions.

As of 1st of April 2010 the new rules about Exhaust Gas Emissions come into affect, meaning most people getting certs will have to install cat convertors - there are exceptions to this, and not sure if it affect WOF's etc too

(all I know is my lotus 7 with side pipe is safe for now)

I have a full roll cage in my car and you have to be a member of a car club, have a competition licence, authority card, log book, enter a minimum of two events a year to be able to drive it on the road. Those rules have been like that for a while.

Well, I did think that was what this "talk" was in relation to - vehicles built up for motorsports.

Had a look for new amendments on NZTA and found:
steering systems
work time and logbooks
vehicle exhuast emissions
passenger service vehicles
frontal impact
operator safety rating
operator licensing
standards compliance
vehicle equipment

i think there is confusion on my friends part and the workshop relating the information. Porkies I tell ya! lol.

Complete load of balls. Don't worry about it, it's just gossiping old women syndrome.

Also, other than in some strange cases (eg Lotus 7 type cars) you can only legally have a cage in a competition car anyway (there's some exceptions, but if you want a one line reply that's enough information).

I thought as much :)

read on a forum just recently of changes to tyre sizing guidelines (targetting drifters and lowriders). ie tyre must meet a minimum width to be lvv certified. so no more 'stretched' look. what was proposed as the minimum width sounded rediculous. ie i cant run my 175-65-14 on a 7" wide rim???

Hmm never really thought about this but what if I wanted to put a roll cage in my Landcruiser which wouldn't take part in any motorsport (very successfully anyway lol)?

Talk to your LVV certifier, but I suspect you're likely only going to be able to put a "half cage" in (rear half only) and have no back seats.

Or trailer it to events.

So I'd need a tow vehicle to tow my tow vehicle!

Spoke to a mate yesterday about his Hotrod and he said Mr Ward is out of certifying again. How true that is I'm not sure but I guess I'll find out when I come to needing a cert (N/A to turbo... not for a cage).

so whats the deal I've recently installed adjustable coilovers in my car, and I'm going in for a cert, so there wont be any changes there?

(they're tein street adjustables, no cage or anything else needed to be certified)

no major changes. As said previously, just some rumour mongering.
If on the NZTA site, search for amendments and it will list the latest round of thigns to be pushed through on April 1, the most significant being the exhaust laws.

Adjustables will still require cert still.

And Andy pulled out a while back, though I heard he was doing cashies on the side. But after the whole "he is, he isn't" easier just to book with Ken or go with the guy over in the wairarapa instead

this sucks!my engine swap should be finished in the beginning of april!i don't want to be forking out for cat that will make my exhaust flow crapper (not going to buy a $$$ one thats for sure)

sooo i was thinking...how thoroughly do they check the cats?cause it would be quite good to cut open an old oem cat and pull all the guff out and replace with a straight bit of pipe?

just put it all back together nicely and no one knows anything?

is this possible or am i dreamn'?

I'd imagine that they would check tailpipe emissions rather than whether a car has an actual cat or not. Cat's can stop working so just because a car has one doesn't mean it's doing something.

Guess I'll be making another exhaust for the MR2 at some point......because there's so much room back there

I wondered this with my old escudo, ended up with a half cage in the rear to keep it road worthy.

Yep Ken McAdam is the only commercial certifier in wgtn, but he cant do scratch built cars. (but there is constructors car club guys for that) Andy Ward handed in his resignation effective 8 Jan 2010. will be interesting to see if they appoint anyone else to do it commercially.

You wont have any issues with tein suspension (unless the shocks are flogged out or you dont have captive springs), they're easy money for certifiers
