E58 Gearbox+Shafts to wide for AE82??

Postby Allister S » Thu Mar 04, 2010 9:40 pm

Hey,

I'm looking to fit a E58 LSD gearbox into an AE82 but the driveshafts look pretty long. Has anyone done this successfully with the full original E58 LSD driveshafts?

I've been running a E52 non-LSD box and shafts from a AE92 up until now and not had problems, but there wasn't a lot of slide left in the inner CV joints. I've also got AE92 hubs/knuckles fitted to the original AE82 lower arms.

Cheers, Al

Anyone out there done this??? Were all the AE101 GZE cars Superstrut?? I have found that the Front Track certainly increased over the years...

AE82 1425-1435mm depending on wheel offsets (ET45 or 39)
AE92 1435-1445mm again depending on wheels fitted
AE101 1460 for a GT but 1470 for Superstrut suspensions??????

Is this mainly wheel differences or are the wheel bearings getting a lot further apart??

Anyone got the lengths of the AE92 and AE101GZE shafts from a Toyota manual??? Thery're usually mentioned in there with a tolerence.

ae101 and ae 92 shafts are the same i have a ae101 on one side and a ae92 on the other we mesued them whe i swapped gearboxed to the 101 lsd box and the only difference was that the shorter shaft has the longer splines for the viscous lsd

I had AE101 shafts in when I first did my AE82 Silvertop conversion, lasted 10km's before the cv's went due to the shafts being to long. THASHZ has an E58 in his AE82 and is having to shorten the shafts.

I think possibly 1 of the shafts from a celica gt4 could be shorter and works.... or maybe it was the aw11.. cant remember.

Thanks for the comments guys. I have a pair of brand new E58 LSD shafts from Toyota that may need to be returned until I can sus this. I could put in the old ones and see if they destroy themselves, but would rather not!

Did the AW11's ever have the long splines to drive the Viscous diff?? GT4 one sounds interesting...

I have fitted AE92 knuckles and lower ball joints to the AE82 arms. Not sure if this increased my track (or more importantly the distance between the wheel bearings when I fitted these)???

Wish I could find a AE101 GTZ without an engine and gearbox fitted and measure between the wheel bearings......

Should my E52 AE92 shafts have already destroyed themselves? Been running fine for 12 years until the gearbox went..... did the shafts bottom and break my gearbox....or the thrashing at Hampton Downs.....??

Thanks, Al

Ok, Measured a new AE101 GZE Lefthand shaft vs a AE92 GZE shaft last night. AE101 is 14mm longer than a used AE92 one when compressed fully. This was measured accounting for the fact the AE101 splines into the gearbox are longer (4-5mm).

I will do an overall length measurement tonight of both new shafts vs the AE92 ones and post up for everyones reference.

My choices now are: find a shorter shaft, convert the AE92 ones to the LSD Gearbox ends (possible???), or widen my AE82 track by 30+mm.

Barry, did you make a track widening adapter (lower arm lenght)??

Brad, can I check/try out some GT4 shafts??

OK, rechecked the new ae101 lsd LH Shaft and this time fully compressed it's the same length as my current AE92 ones!!! RH long shaft is also the same length as the AE92 one!

So now I should be able to use these fine. Maybe using the AE92 hubs and lower Ball joint widens the track a bit......?
