Clutch master disassembly

Postby Dragger_Dan » Mon Mar 22, 2010 8:20 pm

I'm rebuilding my clutch master cylinder on my AW11 as it decided to start leaking and leaked all the fluid out. I managed to get the piston out of the bore, but how does one go about taking the piston/spring assembly apart? Sorry, a bit tricky to describe without pictures, but perhaps somebody could shed some light on this for me?

Do you need to take it apart?

Seals should just stretch over.
What came in the replacement kit?

I can do good pricing on a brand new master from work aka repco/which is what I am using

Kit is ariving at BNT tomorrow. I only wanted to take it apart to do the seals, so you reckon that I shouldn't have to if I'm only doing seals?

Seals are basically just o rings which you slip over the shaft assembly.
Just rebuilt my brothers clutch master cylinder seals in his E30 bmw today and it was exactly the same, pull old seals off put new seals on, being careful not to nick the rubber. Should be very straight forward.

The seal for the reservoir port is spring loaded on the end of a rod that fits into a key-hole in a thimble-like cap that is attached to the end of the piston. The cap has a little tab that is bent down to catch on a lip at the end of the piston.
Use a small flat blade screwdriver, between the springs coils, to bend up the tab, away from the piston, it will then slide off. It will either spring apart & scatter or will come out of the key-hole with little pressure.
KEEP IT CLEAN.
USE ASSEMBLY LUBE/GREASE.
The obvious looking way a seal works is with its tapered lip. It isn't. It's the back of the seal that wears when it tries to get pushed between the piston & bore.

Turns out that the kit you get from BNT is the whole piston/spring assembly anyway. Just pop out the old one, hone the bore and pop in the new one. Thanks for the help anyway guys.
