Sad end to Toyota project

Postby Sick Puppy » Tue Mar 23, 2010 5:43 pm

A Paekakariki man's ten-year build project went up in flames yesterday- just took it on the road after building it, and it caught fire... :(

I had scanned the article, but I can't upload it yet- bloody photoshop!

By the time he hit the kill switch and got out it was an inferno

Sounds like a fire extinguisher may have been to late..

Sad ending for him then. Wonder what engine etc it had?

Car belongs to my brother-in-law's younger brother. Is a KP starlet running a very hot 4age 20v Turbo. Had the best of the best bits in it. Several years of ones life was sunk into the fibreglass bodywork and dashboard alone (think full custom autometer dash and TRD replica widebody Kit). Despite the reports, it has been running for some time and several days testing were done at Slipway.

Grotty from here/import enhancements contributed alot to the build of this car as well.

Was just out to test the new ecu/turbo combo when it went up. The ensuing scrub fire came pretty close to putting their house up in smoke also.

Yes he did have the mandatory 2kg fire extinguisher that rally requires you to have, but obviously wasn't enough.

gutted

:(

Car lived under lock and key and barely ever saw the light of day let alone the road.

A question here to anybody who has been through an experience like this - what bits are recoverable from such a fire? Can you recover a shell and the hard parts of the drivetrain from something like this or would it all be a writeoff?

Are you trolling or deliberately being an asshat? Regardless of what you think of the car, or whether he should have insurance, losing a project like that would be heartbreaking. Even if it was insured, it wouldnt pay out what the car was worth, let alone enough to rebuild it.

Looking at the pics of that, the car would be a write off. My son's other grandmother bought a Laser once that had had a interior fire which gutted the dash and seats, but was able to be repaired. Dont know that I'd been keen though tbh.

I'm being serious. Sure it'd be heartbreaking for the person in question, but objectivity is required here. It's a CAR (well known to be a bad investment to start with). A toyota starlet. Hardly something for the general populace to get all heartbroken about.

And my deleting posts for expressing my feelings about given scenario... nice. If you don't want opinions, don't post.

Sweet, so if I come over and burn all your cactii, and kick your cats, that's cool cause they're just plants and an animal, which arent good investments either?

Actually, they're insured, and the cacti are an appreciating asset. The cat I can afford to lose (but take precautions to avoid loss obviously).

Not often I would resort to violence, but you need a punch in the face right about now.
