ceramic piston coatings

Postby pureadrenalin » Thu Apr 01, 2010 11:19 am

I’m rebuilding the MR2’s engine. New forged 2618 pistons are the order of the day. I’m also debating having the tops of the pistons ceramic coated, since its only an extra $150-160
My question is, will this affect the recommended wall tolerance?
Given that 2618 has a larger recommended tolerance to start with, and may rattle a little when cold, would the ceramic coating keep enough heat out of the piston that it’s worth worrying about, or am I confusing heat transfer properties of the ceramic coating with ultimate temperature?

You're using a Gen 2 3S-GTE block ain't you?

From what I gathered, the hotspot / structrual weekness between pot # 2-3 is already there, I would not elevate the problem by ceramic coating the pistons.

Once you coat the top of the pistons, the heat has to be disappated elsewhere, namely cylinder walls, and the head, valves....

Keep it clean IMO, so the heat can go on the pistons, which gets cooled from oil squirters. And the conrods could take a bit of the heat out too.

If the Japonese don't need to do it, I don't think we need to neither.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

i'm getting my new engine fully coated. Combustion chambers, valves, exhaust ports, piston crowns and skirts. the coating is only about 10microns thick, so tolerances aren't effected.

well worth the extra money imo
