noisy cambelt

Postby eskimo » Mon Apr 05, 2010 2:45 pm

Hey,

Not a Toyota question but thought id ask any way.

Just jumped into my missus 91 323 to shoot up the road and when i started it It started making rather alarming tapping noise..sort of like noisy lifters but not as fast or metalic, The noise was coming from the cambelt end of the motor.

If you lift the revs to about 1500-2000 it stops then will start as soon as it drops to idle

The cambelt was replaced approx 80k ago so was due to be replaced in the next few weeks so I am assuming its a loose cambelt/faulty tensioner

I will pull the cover off later tonight and check the belt but is there anything else I should be looking at?

The motor is the 1600 twin cam(B6 I think)

Cheers
JH

Funny you should mention it, my missus has a 94 323, which has developed a similar sound over the last couple of weeks. Ive traced it back to the A/C compressor as there is a slight bit of play is the shaft. I just need to take the time to ditch the A/C by putting a shorter belt on and just running it on the power steering pump.

Sweet, will check that as well. She doesnt A/C... mainly as it needs to be re-gassed so can bypass it if need be.
