4agze blowing oil out of catch can?

Postby D0DGEE » Tue Apr 06, 2010 8:57 am

just got my corolla going again and did some skids in it and there was heaps of oil blown out of my catch can. got a -10 hose from each rocket cover going to a catch can with a divider in the middle so it dont blow the oil straight out but it is. running 5-30w oil is that to light for the motor or are my rings going which is causing it to blow by and out the breather?

does the thing blow any smoke?

check if the hoses are pressurising.

or do a leak down test

Is this the first time its done 'some skids'(WEITFTM) with this 'rocket cover' :D setup? If not, then something recent has worn/broken and has caused a lot more blowby. New rings, and/or better head drainage, clean up its ports.
Yes, the thinner oil means more is going to flow & be up top, but not enough to make a big difference by going thicker.

5-30 is oil is ok, its a little thin.
I was running 5-30 and had plenty of blow by, changed to 10-40 and it was much much better.

If it's a 16valve head it could be that you flooded the rocker covers with oil from the sustained high rpm. done that before and thought I had killed my motor real good.

blows no smoke. motor prob needs a freshen up its was rebuild about 6 years ago but it gets a hiding when it does go but still goes hard. was told the oil to light so going to change that t o10-60w and see if that helps. its got a red top head on it and i bunged up the return at the back of the head up.

that return pipe would have stopped me doing a disappearing act after 30 seconds of passing lane at 7500rpm. it's possible you might get less smoke and oil usage just by trying different brands of oil with the same viscosity rating, some motors are just fussy like that.

Holy hell!! :o

How long and steep was the passing lane that you were sitting at 7,500rpm for 30 seconds??
