Modifying Bumpers

Postby Emperor » Wed Apr 07, 2010 9:12 pm

Not Toyota, but a general question really.
Has anyone tried to DIY modify their bumper with good results?
I'm looking for a kit for my Stagea, but nothing locally available and cost and arm and a leg overseas, so wana buy something for a different car and modify to fit.

I guess the way to do it would be to cut the bottom of the new one and the top of the factory and join? But how to do it easiest and tidiest with plastic/fibreglass joining?

looked at getting mine lowered a while ago.

the best option i came up with was getting it plastic welded. plastic welding is real cheap and normally you can get smashed up bumpers for free with the lines/sections you want to add.

got quoted like 300bux for lowering the lip 100mm on ae101 trueno front bumper. that is all primered ready for paint.

not quite DIY but still on the cheap side

Yeh, but you cant plastic weld plastic to fibrelgass.

Im talking about getting a URAS/BN Sports glass kit, and sticking it to my factory plastic kit

You should be able to bond them together without to much hassle provided you use an epoxy resin or something as the fiber glass wont stick to plastic

ive done it a few times,
had success modifying plastic bumpers and plastic welding them,

have also done a bit with fibreglass,
took a mould off the top of a factory bumper and then trimmed it to size and glassed a completely different fiberglass lower half to it

joining plastic and fiberglass can also be done but its a lot of work,
bracing and over lapping the join etc so it wont crack

better to find a lower plastic lip that's close and get it plastic welded/shaped to fit,
finding a glue/resin that wont react to both plastic and glass is hard/expensive,

oh its the newer stag, yeah your right it would look funny,

if you find bumpers with the same abs plastic, the welding/bonding will be much easier. a friend even does plastic welding with a spade attachment to his soldering iron,

careful with grafting fibreglass to plastic bumpers, its always the join that gives way..

If I was to do it again, Id cast a mould from the factory bumper and work from there
